hoch: there's the /popular list which i look every once in a blue moon, plus i'm subscribed to a couple of users' links. note that i'm using a rather wide definition of news :).
http://www.netvibes.com -- allows me to pull rss feeds from any site and displays it in a nice custom layout. easy to get up to the minute info at a glance.
I use Digg (though I agree with gregdash about its declining quality, still: occasionally something cool shows up), Gizmodo, Engadget, TUAW, AppleInsider, TWiT/MacBreak, DL.TV, Slashdot, Hack-a-Day, and I'm adding a bunch of news sites to my repertoire as well, including The BBC, Reuters, and Google News front page items.
You know, speaking of news and RSS feeds, is there some way to get a scroller of some sort to display news along the bottom of my screen (or on the sides) as it comes in, alá television news network scrollers? I suppose I could use Vienna and Growl for a similar effect, but (just for curiosity's sake) it's such an obvious niche someone has to have filled it.
@ Kichigai. head over to my blog and download the Particls package I have. Scrolling RSS feeds, you pick sources, rate them, keywords. The best part? You can auto discover based on likes and it will start pulling feeds from all over. Send me a note if you want a full breakdown, the guys that built it did a great job but I prepackaged some basic social networking content to make startup faster.
I'm a Google Reader fan now, due to the fact that they have optimized versions for mobile phones and the Wii. It's actually not a bad experience reading my news on my 32" TV.
