It's because they haven't figured out how to get all those things to play inside quicktime (hint: a few simple downloads) or convert things (hint: VisualHub).

yeah it can play anything, right until you try to do something like pause or jog or anything. if i turn it on and just leave it we're cool, anything else - it crashes. sadly its frustrating to get Video_TS folders to play with quicktime.

I've been using VLC for ages on my iBook G4, my family PC, my friend's 2nd gen iBook G4, my friends' PCs, my Linux boxes, my friend's Linux box, and nonoe of them are crashy. Make sure you're running the latest version from videolan.org, and delete EVERYTHING from your original installation (use something like AppZapper or uApp)

It's because those people don't use Macs. It works great on a "real" *nix system. Never once crashed for me in Ubuntu.

Ugh, bad idea. QuickTime chews up vastly more resources, and you have to pay to load things in full screen. Furthermore, transcoding your videos a second time (they were transcoded before you got them) dramatically decreases the quality.

I get some errors but I just ignore them and it is still better than quicktime

I find that VLC works excellent on Windows, pretty good on most Linux and really badly on Mac. I really would like a better media player on the Mac. Mplayer is OK too, but not great.

I've not had any crashes on my MacBook Pro. I like the full screen feature that free QT doesn't have yet.

It crashes at least every other time that I run it for me. Usually in the middle of a video right when it's getting to "the good part" of said video. It must have some sort of Maximize User Frustration Level AI built into it. ;-) Used to work fine for me with no problem, but something -- either the switch to Intel Mac, or something else they introduced in a recent version, has caused it to go wonky for me alot of the time.
