Could someone give me the run down on what types of software would be required to build a website like microsoft.com/surface/
I like the flow but I haven't been into wedesign in a while and I dont know all the new stuff? It looks like a flash movie to start, but then how would the movie like intro of the first three buttons move into screen and then be accessible buttons? Thanks for anyones help....
They're using Adobe Flash. Personally I'm not a flash developer but it makes a web site looky nice and "flashy". It's not a compatiable though. You must have the plugin so accessing via mobile device is a bit difficult.
Ahh, Juhu only showed me the first part of that comment. The movies are in a FLV format (flash video) and in a flash environment you can move stuff around and make a website do cool flash animations with no problem. I believe people are moving away from Flash though . When's the last time you went to a big name website and the site was ran by flash. Now it is good for demoing stuff, like this. But for mainstream use, it's bad and hard to cache.
for cool cross-platform animations and web 2.0 goodness, check out http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/ - the YUI toolkit that Yahoo is using for all of their modern apps and is available as free software (very free) for the rest of us.
So what other types of newer webdesign is being used to create what I call the new soft web designs..i hear about AJAX and some others.....are programs like dreamweaver and the likes supporting these new formats??? Any suggestions on software too create some web pages??
And considering that Yahoo is still the #1 homepage on the net, and their new webapps are looking very slick and yet must work cross browser, YUI has some solid advantages.
I believe the latest version of Dreamweaver comes with Spry, Adobe's tag-based AJAX framework. Along the same lines as YUI is Ext, which you can learn more about at http://www.extjs.com
Ajax, Ruby On Rails, Javascripting, Pearl, HTML, PHP, XML. All of these languages when used together properly, allows for what you are seeing with the Web 2.0 shift. Little bits of Flash but as stated above, great for demoing or showing something off, bad for a general purpose site.

It's completely flash. control-click on the mac anywhere on the screen brings up the flash settings menu.

It also is very inaccessible from an ADA perspective, so you can get in trouble in the US, especially if you're a government site.
