Hi SteveSaylor, I thought TWIT was geek culture? Net@Nite is certainly culture as much as news. I think TWiL and the BioTech podcast are a bit of a branch as well. But a branch that I enjoy. I'm not a gamer so I don't miss that branch but you may have a point.
Ah I see guys, I totally agree it's Leo's call, I was just wanting to know if I was the only one who thought about this.
As far as Geek Culture, more along the lines of pop culture like comic books, TV shows and movies, that kind of stuff. net@nite is great for web 2.0 or net culture, but I was thinking more of a wider topic.
Anyway, I also agree gaming was something that people who are fans of TechTV say is what ruined our fave TechTV, but what brought that question on was when Leo talked to Morgan at the airport. It just brought it to my mind.
But Leo's call. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who has thought about this
I believe the way it should work is that Leo and friends should do what they know, what they love and what drives them to want to talk.
I'd not want to listen to a podcast where the people are forcing themselves to cover a topic none of them are highly interested in. They touch on game news, but I don't get the feeling that any of them are hardcore gamers.
There are plenty of gaming podcasts that exist (avoiding to pimp my own) and many of them are well done, hooked into the industry and have plenty to talk about.
The podcast is about what they love, and those that subscribe share many of the same enthusiasm (which is why they don't unsubscribe). Why fix something that isn't broken?
The overkill of gaming is what killed TechTV. They could have played the Screensavers and Call for help over and over, and I'd watch it. I'm a gamer but I like to keep it separate from work. There should be a gaming channel coming here to Jaiku you think?
Since I start this today about the game Q*Bert sorry guys. I fully agree there should be a gaming channels on Jaiku. So lets start some emails to our favorite gaming podcasts let them know about Jaiku.
I need to stay on top of technology issues and news to stay competitive professionally. I prefer no gaming content/news mixed in. There are plenty of podcasts and sites to digest that.
As much as I love my geek culture podcasts, I don't think we need any more--unless Twit wants to do a separate geek culture cast (as opposed to opening up one of the existing casts to include culture). I have two favorite scifi geekcasts: geekson and 2 Irish Geeks and a TV --It's enough to get my scifi fixes from them. As far as gaming, I'm not sure...
re: techdiversions comment: Thanks for that - I think you nailed it on the head. The geeky enthusiasm for the subjects we cover come from what we know and love. I can't pretend to be a gamer - the last game I owned was the Atari 2600. Leo is a great tech generalist, and someone who can carry a fluent conversation in all corners of the culture. This is the huge value he brings. Is there a "Leo" who focusses strictly on the gaming world? That would be someone to keep an eye on...
There really is no gaming generalist that would be an exact match. What my game podcast did was try to use the structure of Buzz Out Loud with a mix of our own segments (like game history). So we report a few topics of gaming news and comment on them shortly and move to the next. Some game podcasts get side tracked and go on and on about the same thing for 30 minutes (or longer).
Other podcasts, cover PC only (PC Gamer podcast), others do a mix of everything like The Hot Spot). The only close "personality" would be Major Nelson but he's a Microsoft employee and his podcast is highly if not completely Microsoft Xbox 360-cetric, far from a game generalist.
In either case, the gaming crowd doesn't seem to be as great as the techy crowd in terms of listener base. Tech heads tend to be all into technology and news about technology. Some gamers are like this while many just want to game - not really sit down and hear about it.
Ya there are plenty of gaming specific programs out there. TWIT should definately stay tech oriented. That's what I listen for. I have other shows I watch if I'm looking for gaming info.

Umm... seems to me that's Leo's call, not the TWiT army's call. Of course, one might politely ask whether Leo would consider branching out (more).
IMHO, of course.

Avoid branching into gaming, IMO that is what ruined TechTV.

I'm pretty sure it already branches into gaming and geek culture

I'd host a gaming show, but it'd interfere with my no gaming/work policy... :0)

I think there could be a mix of tech and gaming. TSS and CFH was like that in the beginning.
