Mostly IntelliJ IDEA (Java IDE) but I've just started using TextMate (which I still need to at some point)

It's also deceptively powerful, I've been using it for about 8 months now and still don't really use its full capabilities.

Don't let TextMate's brilliantly clean interface fool you -- it's got the most depth and extensibility of any of the developer-specific text editors I've been able to find.

Coda and there no doubt! TextMate is a very powerfull tool, but if you don't need some of its more advanced feautures, then I would go for Coda.

I hear a lot of people saying TextMate, but I'm going to go recommend TextWrangler. It's freeware by BareBones software, it's got syntax highlighting, plug-ins, scripting support, the ability to tab all your windows (in the drawer), and it's free. I've had no problems with it under Leopard, so before you spend money on anything, I'd say check this out.

I use Coda, but I am noticing a lot of people recommend Textmate; what are some of the more advanced features that Textmate has over Coda?

I only tried Coda when it's beta was out, so I don't know a lot of it's deeper features, but I love TextMate's approach. It's dead-simple interface and heavy keyboard focus just hit me the way I like to work. Coda's definitely more beautiful.

I have been using bbedit since day one, haven't had much experience with textmate, but heard it's great. Coda is definitely a looker though. like stylesheet support.

Coda! If you don't like it, have a look at TextMate or SubEthaEdit.. But Coda!

    Textmate or vim.

@fabsh gedit runs in Mac OS X, but you need to install/compile GTK and have the X11 environment installed (it's standard with Leopard now). Fink and DarwinPorts have it, if you want to make things easier on yourself.

Does 'joe' run on the Mac?

1 year, 11 months ago by strredwolf

  • fabsh

Joe is great. So is nano. :)

1 year, 11 months ago by fabsh

  • strredwolf

Nano (aka freed pico clone) I agree is worth it for begining users... but for HTML, I'd rather have joe's increased flexibilty and that WordStar command set.
