I use pownce extensively as a partial replacement for email for my close group of friends. I hardly post anything public there. It still has a long way to go in terms of user base, apps/devices supported and keyword tracking.
I undestand pownce's philosophy regarding message lengths...they don't care about it. I understand twitter's philosophy too where they don't want to bombard other users with lengthy messages. what I don't understand is why jaiku restricts only the original messages(that too not from the IMs - which they say is a bug) but not the comments.
For me personally, I prefer the community here. Pownce has been ultra slow for a long time, even with a reasonably sized contact list. The novelty wore off for a lot of people (myself included) some months ago.
actually reading all the replies here is making me like jaiku much much better. to hell with pownce, its way more cluttered anyway and i dont like the fact that you have to pay to get the most out of it.
@tabrez: "what I don't understand is why jaiku restricts only the original messages" - my take on this would be because, Jaiku is supposed to be a mobile app, on your phone, not web based with a mobile app.
The message length could be increased I guess, but I don't have much problem with it.
@runningwithbulls as I said, short messages are not bad. but jaiku restricts only the original messages but not the comments, even though both go to the same number of contacts. so the restriction only for the messages looks arbitrary to me.
pownce was cool until google bought jaiku. we might as well prepare for jauiku since in a year we'll have our google android phones, gmail, wireless, search, maps... should i go on ;-/

tabrez: it could be arbitrary. but my point was the original message is assumed (maybe not, I don't konw) to be coming from a mobile..
Or maybe they want people to communicate in some haiku form :)
