Personally, I'd LOVE it if they'd use macbooks here, but most of the software we use is Microsoft and Windows only as well as the fact that it needs to integrate into what we do. I'd have no trouble using Macbooks and Macs in general (I lvoe them) but our IT Technician isn't exactly a techie (I'm just an assistant at the school but am a techie at heart - looking for a proper IT job). Also, the 2 laptops she's found are very cheap which is one of the main factors in a school.
I would suggest for windows machines then, EMachine. I know people hate them. But I got my dad to get one for 400 bucks for the full package and he loves it, Plus it is cheap for how often he screws up his computers.
Yeah, these are really cheap, but it is also the support for it. The guy we hire here is a windows guy and the teachers wouldn't be able to handle mac. It basically also a choice between Dell and HP (Dell is the Intel, HP is the AMD).
Cant help you there then. I hate HP's. And there service department at HP is a bunch of idiots, I should have their job. And dell has a lot of issues too.
Well, that's what I've heard. We usually fix them ourselves though so we shouldn't really need their support but we're just looking for cheap laptops for the teachers to use. We have projectors in every class and interactive whiteboards and we just don't have enough laptops so we're looking to get new ones. If I were in charge I'd have macs everywhere but we're locked into Windows at the moment. How about generally processors. Intel or AMD? (I'm kind of out of the loop when it comes to processors, it's just started moving too quickly).
Thanks. I'll be taking your comments into consideration. I've actucally now been given the names of the 2 laptops under consideration so I can do a proper comparison now. Thanks for your help.
I run a Turion X2 at 1.8 and 2GBs of ram with Vista. If you will be running Vista keep in mind that its a lot faster than xp at 2GBs of ram, equal at 1.3 and ridiculously faster than xp at anything below. Either way the amount of ram generally dictates the choice of OS. CPU gains are largely insignificant unless your apps actually use it (which is unlikely).
As for the macs ppl keep in mind that the entrance barrier is 1100 + cost of retail windows (in this case).

I think Intel's are fine. I have never been an AMD fan though.
