Question 1: What are the research paradigms that you can apply with social media?
Question 2: How to apply social media in research practices?
My answers:
Q1: I think that we can't speak of research methods based on social media or etc. yet because social media isn't so defined concept yet. Social media concept is extremely interesting in researcher's work context. Every researcher has to communicate and co-operate with colleagues and to position his/her thoughts in certain research discourse. In this, social media is revolutional tool or environment. Social media can change that we aren't anymore group of single rivaling researchers but united evolving research community.
Q2: Social media approach is usable at least in idea generation, design, validation, analyze and report phases in research process. In idea generation phase freely innovating collective minds can be higly efficient resource to kill bad ideas and intesify viable ideas. Design phase needs also diverse views to avoid uncreative production. No-one knows everything so in validation there have to be many eyes to point out flaws and lack of validness. Same information can appear different to researcher with different backgrounds, so analyze phase gains of multiple approaches to uncover valuables from the data. In report phase there are usually deadlines to keep, so benefits of co-operation through social media can be so simple as peer support.
nice #tutkimusparvi presentation. however, i was expecting also some criticism. what is it NOT good for and what challenges arise when doing research this way?
@ekurvine, there are lot of challenges: privacy issues when information of researchers and research is public , copyrights are not simple to handle, no-one knows how to involve funding with this open discourse
@ekurvine: That's why there is the backchannel and couple presenters answering your questions.
It's easier to see the good points, but mostly we have been avoiding the potential problems. Money and how to distribute funding is one. I don't have an answer to that, but that kind of a problem is one where tutkimusparvi itself is in strongest position to solve.
jaiku being down today was nasty :( I rely on it to get my Facebook updated.. If you ever do research on the youth, get a IRC-Galleria community going for it, would be interesting to see would it fly..
Are there any downsides in the uncontrolled process of Tutkimusparvi, for example wrt. writing an article, or is it just plain superior to traditional research?
@teroheiskanen & @thin. agree. also, since successes have many fathers and failures are orphans, i'd like to see whether there will be anyone left to wrap up the less-so-successful cases that often contain valuable lessons for future research.. (been there done that)
@touqo: I think in Tutkimusparvi process we go even closer to the deadlines. For example this presentation slides were last edited at 16:56. Same goes for the MindTrek paper.
@touqo: Yeah. Lack of control is one downside. However if someone enthusiastic enough kicks the task forward it will eventually finish. There was some discussion about that somewhere ... wonder if I can find it.
@teroheiskanen. is not only about stealing afterwards. premature publishing may also come close to stealing. mention something vague in your blog today and you can claim it later..
Free time for me, though I have to admit that sometimes I can't keep my eyes off Jaiku at work either. However I think it is encouraged too, right @priio?
@ekurvine, yeah it's not so simple what is "idea" and what is "stealing", but main thing is that if everything is holoptic/transparent then the history of the idea can be trailed afterwards
I think timestamping ideas/innovations is a slippery slope. Somehow the attitude should be more open and the work should not be jeopardized if someone else publishes an unfinished idea first, without asking you. This should be more about the swarm itself than what it produces.
@touqo, imho implicit ideology of Parvi is that ideas and science is for humankind and stealing is not a issue. If someone gets something of Parvi's work then parvi's has succeeded
@touqo: Well. As i said on the backchannel-backchannel: at least we change the presentations. When everyone does this backchannel presentation we can claim to be the first.
@touqo: it's kind of funny that you are using the word "you" when referring to Parvi. As I see it, you are also part of the Parvi yourself (you have joined the channel and participate the discussion here). :)
@ekurvine: in some cases the researchers may rather want to change the world and practices even if they don't benefit themselves. As I see it, it's better to see the results becoming success stories - even if it were someone else who makes them happen. Too much of the research doesn't become anything real.
@priio, remember to mention (by the food and drinks) that swarm is looking for research cases if someone has actual problems that could fit for swarm to solve
I share @priio's point of view... and it is not so easy to steal idea because after the stealing you must also write an article or something (= work work work)...
@thin, this sleeper cell went off to drinks pior to seeing your comment. And now off to some more drinks downtown with a bunch of other friends. Can you connect the dots here as far as my incentives? :-)
@ekurvine: I know. And I'm selfish too... But today was a nice example of that that if you swarm instead of working (presenting) alone, also your friends get something to eat. Instead of one present we got four packages for the swarm presentation. ;) (@teroheiskanen & @thin: you'll get yours soon.)
@priio, I am reading these jaikus now after some hours before falling to sleep. If with these 2c I can be indeed counted in, I'm your man. I promise nothing but random foolish comments, mind. :-)

There were two questions that came in advance:
Question 1: What are the research paradigms that you can apply with social media?
Question 2: How to apply social media in research practices?

I would say a lot of the traditional research could be done on social media, but it requires a change towards openness in ones mind.

nice #tutkimusparvi presentation. however, i was expecting also some criticism. what is it NOT good for and what challenges arise when doing research this way?
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
I could switch the slides from here if I wanted thanks to the tools used to create the presentation. I'll leave it up to @priio and @pe3 though ;)

Tee hee hee @priio: "Jaiku's been down every time we've talked about Tutkimusparvi."

Any plans for internationalization?

@ekurvine, there are lot of challenges: privacy issues when information of researchers and research is public , copyrights are not simple to handle, no-one knows how to involve funding with this open discourse
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@touqo, just plans not any real actions for internationalization

@touqo: or for world dominance (at least in the public) ;)
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@teroheiskanen, ok thanks. It would make perfect sense, though, wouldn't it?

Did they just namecheck @jussi?

It was me ^_^

jaiku being down today was nasty :( I rely on it to get my Facebook updated.. If you ever do research on the youth, get a IRC-Galleria community going for it, would be interesting to see would it fly..

@touqo, when Tutkimusparvi is in question, it can be plans -> actions or actions-> plans :)
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@Gravitas, good idea
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
Very interesting to see how the Academy will respond to this kind of research.

Are there any downsides in the uncontrolled process of Tutkimusparvi, for example wrt. writing an article, or is it just plain superior to traditional research?
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
@jahapaula: Indeed.
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@jahapaula, I hope that they are as open minded as tutkimusparvi :)
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@teroheiskanen & @thin. agree. also, since successes have many fathers and failures are orphans, i'd like to see whether there will be anyone left to wrap up the less-so-successful cases that often contain valuable lessons for future research.. (been there done that)

1 year, 9 months ago by thin
do you publish your research with something like the Creative Scientist -licence/process or something similar?
1 year, 9 months ago by Gravitas
@touqo, lack of control is one downside, we are heading to find middle course between top-down controlled way and no-control-at-all way
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@touqo: but in the end I think the outcome in both cases surpasses those traditional processes. Constant peer review is the keyword here.
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@thin good point. Very much in line with what's going on in general. Immediate feedback from anyone.
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
@Gravitas, I think we have that (creative commons, creative scientist)
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@touqo: Yeah. Lack of control is one downside. However if someone enthusiastic enough kicks the task forward it will eventually finish. There was some discussion about that somewhere ... wonder if I can find it.

academy reviewers usually read the main applicant's cv very closely..

how is atmosphere there in Otaniemi?

1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
@teroheiskanen cool, thanks. And they are used as well? ;)
1 year, 9 months ago by Gravitas
@teroheiskanen, very nice atmosphere. Full room.
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
Thanks @touqo. Feedback from the scene is appreciated.
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@Gravitas, @pe3 = Petri Kola knows the commons more closely
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
Question from the audience: Can someone steal your idea and publish it?
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
@teroheiskanen he just explained it live. CC by attribution licence. Nice.
1 year, 9 months ago by Gravitas
@pe3 is answering vocally, but @thin and @teroheiskanen, you can write something, too. :-)
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
Yes, but the source of the idea can be seen too.
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@touqo, that is not possible because the idea is already published when that someone tries to "steal" it
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
What's the attitude of your employers to swarming, is it supported? Or is it just free time ;)
1 year, 9 months ago by jahapaula
@jahapaula, i think it differs widely, someone doesn't approve and others can praise it
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@teroheiskanen. is not only about stealing afterwards. premature publishing may also come close to stealing. mention something vague in your blog today and you can claim it later..
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
@jahapaula: I see it as coffee pause activity. Or swarm at home. :)

Of course you can shift this thing one level up and claim that "we were the first Parvi!" :-)
1 year, 9 months ago by touqo
@touqo: Well. As i said on the backchannel-backchannel: at least we change the presentations. When everyone does this backchannel presentation we can claim to be the first.

science involves money and fame for those who claim things first. there is no way around it: there will be competition and dispute, always.
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
You have been very active (: What is the status of presentation? Is it over?
1 year, 9 months ago by juhana2
@priio, i just thought the same thing. You can join Parvi so easily. I have counted @touqo as swarmer who have chosen the role of outside questioner.
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
we off-topic?
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
@ekurvine: sounds like a challenge. And challenge it is to change the mindset.
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@juhana2, yes it is over, and it went good (näpsäkästi) said @priio
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@priio & @teroheiskanen: I think @touqo is a sleeper cell ready to burst in action if a correct signal is given ;)
1 year, 9 months ago by thin
@ekurvine: in some cases the researchers may rather want to change the world and practices even if they don't benefit themselves. 1 year, 9 months ago by priio
@thin, sleeper swarm, the reserve of swarm
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
@priio. but you need to eat too? ;)

1 year, 9 months ago by juhana2
thank you all, it was nice session
1 year, 9 months ago by teroheiskanen
i would love to see is a swarm-microblog to claim "patent by publishing" and challenge a patent..
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
thank you all. obviously there is still a need to sync real life an remote backchannel somehow...
1 year, 9 months ago by ekurvine
@thin, this sleeper cell went off to drinks pior to seeing your comment. And now off to some more drinks downtown with a bunch of other friends. Can you connect the dots here as far as my incentives? :-)
