http://mauku.henrikhedberg.com/news#20080409233000 includes details of the gestures, but I've not seen mention of it in many other places. It's a fantastic feature, and one I personally use all the time.
in mauku the start point of the "open jaiku" gesture is the line with the message/thread you want to read. For closing and most of the other gestures you can use the whole application area.

I think the gestures should be part of the hildon application framework as an optional possibility for every developer.

if you start the "open" gesture from the avatar picture instead, it opens that person's jaiku / twitter feed instead
