Anyone know a text editor for Linux that is similar to www.editplus.com ... It's one thing I miss from XP, I may try running it in WINE.

not exactly the same thing, but Kate(KDE) is my favourite programmer's editor for GNU/Linux. KWrite(KDE) and gedit(GNOME) are popular.

if you will learn how to use emacs - you will love it (unfortinatly, you will hate it at first :-)

I don't think something that does something so simple should be so complex to use.

Well, actially that's the point: it is very simple to use. But most of people are stuck with mouse and narrows. They don't understend that you don't need mouse to write and you don't need to move your hands all the time.

Besides, at notebook, where accessing home/end/pgup/pgdn keys is little complex, emacs is very usefull.

It's just too different from what I'm used too. I have no idea how to do anything. It's just not intuitive to me. I'm sure if you're a wizard with it you could do things quickly and easily but I just don't get it.

yes, press "help" and there you'll find a tutorial. Just spent 2 hours to read it and you will know the basics. Then, if you will use emacs 2-3 days you will start to feel free in it. In a week you will start to like it. In a couple of months you will love it (or you will throw it out because it is just not for you :-)

I see your point but it's tough to put that kind of effort in to learning something when I'm happy with the normal way of working. If you catch my drift. Maybe one day... I say that about a lot of things :)

and when I do someone will tell me that emacs is rubbish and Vim is the way forwards ;)

well, I didn't even think that you will start learning it. Just wanted you to know (most of people think emacs is complex to use, just like Linux. It's not true and I think they should know about it, not necessary to use).

@rpcutts: If you liked BlueFish, the you may want to give Screem a chance: http://www.screem.org/

    so what about kate?

1 year, 4 months ago by kostbebix

  • rpcutts

just taking a look. It looks like it will do all I need and the GUI seems decent. My right click - open with - kate doesn't seem to work though. If I get that sorted and figure out how to set it up as the default then I think we're in business.

What is the desktop that you use? Gnome/GTK Based? KDE/QT Based?

For KDE: + Kate + Kwrite + Kyzis

For Gnome: + Gedit + Geany + GVim

  • kostbebix

a good think in kate that there is more "light" version of it with the same base called kwrite.

Gnome. Don't like Gedit, Geany seems a bit better but something I don't like about the GUI. GVim is out for the same reason as Emacs.

Kate seems to work fine bar the right click open.

Wait! Geany has plugins. Look its plugins. http://geany.uvena.de/Support/Plugins

JFYI: Vi and Emacs are not difficult to use, in fact they are the easiest; they are relatively difficult to learn, especially for those who have learned other ways of editing.

@rpcutts you can right click on the files with file types that you want to open with Kate, select Properties, go to "Open With" tab, select "Kate"(or add it using "Add" button if it is not already there), and click "Close."

@tabrez yea it was set up like that but clicking on kate did nothing. The solution was this: http://ur1.ca/vp
