I installed the latest Ubuntu, but I have no idea how to install flash 9, I feel like a dork for not understanding what I am doing.

Open Synaptic Package manager, and use the search and look for ubuntu extras, and install that. It'll give you mp3, dvd playback, flash, java, and MS fonts. As for remote desktop, in Ubuntu that's easily configurable too (for the most part) just look in the menu in System -> Preferences for Remote Desktop
