I wonder if it is worrying that 90% of the posts on Jaiku seems to come from imported feeds. That would turn it into a feed aggregator.

In stead of a microblogging platform.

I've been considering removing my feeds...

But it does fit in with the whole "life-stream" concept. A balance will work out in time, no doubt. Some days I micro-blog, other days I do the bulk of my writing on my blogs, some days I do nothing but leave comments.

I like the choice and the variety.

i would love to see the feeds on a separate tab..

mobile changes that around, as soon as you get the new client or m.jaiku.com - in the end it is neither of the two, just a way to have conversations with friends & strangers. explore tab is irrelevant (as it is on twitter), i would argue.

I have no friends that use Jaiku. I want friends.

Wow. Looking at the explore page just now, I couldn't find ANY jaikus...

jade: well how often are you looking on that tab? should probably start filtering that one, i agree. but in the end, you will not use it too often anyway. add a couple of people/chans that seem interesting and take it from there.

dave: could you try and get them to at least sign up on jaiku and feed their tweets here for you to read? if not, you could add 'me and my friends' to your own feeds (not so nice solution).

Oh, I was merely pointing out that there are a helluvalot of feeds compared to Jaikus... but thanks for the advice. Channel surfing I go...

What I do find annoying are all the people who appear to be using Jaiku as a general news feed aggregator rather than a "lifestream" feed aggregator of their own life and content. I think this sort of thing is partly to blame for the high level of feeds on the "Explore" page.

and as a counterpoint, I think that is in many ways the beauty of Jaiku as life feed aggregator. What my friends know about me via my feeds (from my blogs, what i', browsing, photos, what i"m listening too, etc.) is in many ways as relevant if not moreso than short twitters like "clipping toenails"... i mean it's all presence info. Why does something typed into Jaiku more or less valuable than a feed of my OTHER online activities via RSS pulled into Jaiku? I think both are great. I want one place to dump my online "activities" and for now Jaiku does that best.

Their main problem will be uptake of new users, as people want to be where their friends are or what's the point. But I think the more mobile-focused use cases make them different. Maybe that will uptake slower in the US (smaller Nokia population anyway due to US carriers). Do they have a mobile Jaiku app in Java / J2ME that runs on any mobile phone?

Though, I think non-personal feeds (such as news feeds) aren't really what Jaiku is really about. I think smperris meant this, too. Your photo, blog, and even bookmark feeds are all personality indicators, and interesting to look at in the context of a user, but general news feeds (for instance) just choke the streams.

@cervus: I just looked at the Explore tab a few days ago, trying to find other Jaiku-ers I might want to add. But the fact that 98% of the posts on the Explore page were feed entries made this quite difficult. Also, it was annoying that I couldn't keep clicking on the "older" link to go through the backlog. I had to "hack" the URL to keep going back to older posts. Why limit how many times you can click "older" when the older pages are still available?

Hopefully in the future we can filter out feed items in the Explore tab. Granted I wouldn't use it most of the time, but when I do want to use it, it should be useful! :)

JadeMonkee nailed my thoughts exactly. Personal feeds (blog posts, what you have dugg, flickr photos, del.icio.us bookmarks etc etc) are great. It's all part of the lifestream concept. Every time I discover something I do creates an RSS feed, I add it to Jaiku.

I am really growing to dislike the idea that people add feeds that don't display something they have done but something completely external. In my opinion that's not a lifestream, that's a feed aggregator.

I'm with kencamp in that I would like an option to explore Jaikus only. I wonder how hard that is to actually achieve (I have no idea, which is why I'm wondering).

@cervus: Thanks for the link! Trying it now (already looks more like what I want than the official mobile client).

on a related note - i'm now posting from m.jaiku (as opposed to the beta client) as I don't wanna 'hose' my stream with all the music i'm listening to on my phone..

Interesting observation JadeMonkee. There are two things I foresee Jaiku doing to alleviate this problem. (A) Jaiku could only show member Jaikus on the Explore page or only add Jaikus to the Front Page. (B) They simply add a tab to the Explore page which will only show the members Jaikus and not any other feed. Seems simple enough to me and I have to agree, that Jaiku is starting to look more like a feed aggregator than a Lifestream service.
