And technically it isn't even true. As far as I understand Jaiku will multiply by giving birth to open-source derivativs. This very instance will also go on, just not activly developped by Google the company (yet many googlers apparently feel passionat about it). It is now up to the community to mesh Jaiku.com and its derivativs to other social networks. The strongest point of Jaiku is that it is discussion re-invented, ie. instead of being topic focussed like on traditional online forums it is activity focussed. Online friends gather together to chat starting from one theme (the jaiku subject) and end up wherever they want. Traditional fora on the internet hav been problem focussed and this has narrowed the view others hav seen about you. Jaiku is more like hanging around with your mates in a bar/pub. Problems are discussed but equal measure is given to light-hearted matter.
Going open-source is not neccessarily a bad thing--it would open up the project to external developers, and make localization a lot easier....however it is unclear what will happen to the Jaiku team--most of which have a Nokia background...Google is also closing down ops in Norway and Sweden, however here in Denmark the Chrome/Android development team will continue, I hear....
