Additionally, if you start an entry submitted via IM or SMS with an @ reference, Jaiku will attach your message as a comment to the most recent thread the referenced user posted in. Otherwise, everything submitted via IM or SMS would go in as an entirely new Jaiku.

No, not even with @ . But it's very useful when you follow many people (sometimes your stream is quite long after being offline for a while :-P).
If you need to get attention from someone who doesn't follow you, it's better to comment his/her jaiku.

Yes hence my confusion. A reply to a jaiku is an inherent "@", yet people still stick in an @. I reckon we should rid Jaiku of this twitter @ wart :)
