Say what?? Did they not notice they own Jaiku?

I agree that it seems a little off, but with Jaiku having a smaller userbase, and limited user growth potential (invitation only), it does make a certain amount of sense.

(speaking as a Jaiku user type person here, not as a part-time contractor/support type - I know nothing officially, and anything I say about anything to do with Google should considered while bearing my complete lack of knowledge of, or relationship with Google in mind.)

Sigh, it is kind of sad. Would've loved to see some action in Jaiku for super tuesday.

they certainly aren't promoting jaiku's growth, though.

Yes I agree, I remember when Leo L. joined and we had so many comments per second lol.

yeah, I understand that Twitter has a bigger audience and so it means more 'action' on their map. However I can't think of a single other company that would use a competitor's product over their own simply for the larger userbase.

At the very least, a Jaiku+twitter map ..

They're definitely strengthening the urge to break down and get a twitter account :P

@gamgee911: Exactly .. it's not just about bringing new people to Jaiku, it's about holding on to what we've got. (And it does make a difference if we make it or not. We love each other, and that's a lot for love. We'll give it a shot. Whoaaah. We're half way there, Whoaah. Livin' on a prayer)

@gamgee911 Oh please do get one! It's lots of fun, albeit maddening at times. But the same can be said for life too, I suppose? :)

My impression is that Twitter is more US-centric and Jaiku is more international, perhaps that had something to do with it.

Damn you Measham, and your virulent earworms!

Thank [Deity] I have my iPod at work today....

@tndaisy haha it can be tempting but between Jaiku and Pownce I think I've been pretty well set for the past year or so.

@mtrichardson good observation! I hadn't really thought of it that way.

Wouldn't be interesting if Google just bought both jaiku and twitter. Not sure if it would be a good idea, but interesting nonetheless.

@Aaqil Yes Google owns Jaiku. I wouldn't say that Twitter is nothing, personally I like Jaiku better. It's like the argument between MySpace and Facebook. Twitter's was around first and, in my opinion, it seems to be more popularly advertised. I hoped Google's acquisition of Jaiku would bring both new exciting features and some popularity. I guess we'll have to wait to see what will happen.

    Two words. Strategy tax: http://www.scripting.com/davenet/2001/04/30/strategyTax.html

twitter nothing for me, jaiku channels feature best, hope that google will work well more on it.

1 year, 9 months ago by Aaqil

  • pfig

except google doesn't own both jaiku and twitter.

  • gamgee911

@adewale Could you explain how Strategy tax applies here?

    1 year, 9 months ago by gamgee911

  • gamgee911

@pfig Yes, so purchasing both would be an interesting move made by Google. Albeit, if it would work is something I'm not sure of.

@gamgee911: Google maps is live and stable. They want to bring users to it. So they bypass their own Jaiku and integrate with the larger audience at Twitter. Thus raising awareness of the abilities of the live, stable Google Maps. Jaiku would not be much more than a blip on the radar of the Google Maps team.

1 year, 9 months ago by RickMeasham

  • pfig

@samuel that's why i mentioned google doesn't own both, so strategy tax doesn't apply.

  • Aaqil

    @rick hehehe hmmm. maybe.

1 year, 9 months ago by Aaqil

  • RickMeasham

They own both Google Maps and Jaiku. The 'tax' they're paying is Jaiku -- in order to bolster Google Maps.

1 year, 9 months ago by RickMeasham

  • Aaqil

@pfig i dont have to pay those taxes? :-S

nice to know that google have jaiku.

    jaiku registrations jaiku registrations :'(

  • gamgee911

@RichMeasham Ah, thank you. Lol, I've never thought of Google Maps as needing bolstering, but I suppose it has its competition.

@rick they also tell me, in no uncertain way, that they couldn't care less about jaiku, that in fact they don't even need jaiku (with which i agree to a certain extent). so, who's to tell me that tomorrow they won't just shut down jaiku because they can use a more successful platform?

1 year, 9 months ago by pfig

  • gamgee911

Well Jaiku is far superior in features to Twitter, I think Google sees it that way. They just had to appeal to the larger audience. Why they couldn't go with both platforms, maybe even included Pownce or what-have-you, I don't know. Aren't they just using the RSS feeds and running them through the Google Maps service?

  • shonzilla

They should have made a three-way mash-up: Google Maps + Twitter + Jaiku.

This would add an European angle into the future of USA.. and the world. ;-)

Just to fix a mistake I said - Jaiku has been around longer than twitter.
