What's up with Xasa Networks/Bitacle copying Jaiku user content? (http://www.xmltop.org/[Jaiku ID])

WTF?!!!!!!!! Seeking a man?! Eff them! They need to be brought down!

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • jezlyn

WTH? That's BS! I guess there's no way for a Jaiku user to necessarily prevent someone from taking one's Jaiku posts and reusing them on a different site, but that xmltop.org site is a big ripoff of the original, even showing the Jaiku contacts of that person.

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • edythemighty

It shows me as seeking a *man* damn it! I don't tolerate that kind of stuff! I've worked hard to make my handle universal, but only so that this kind of stuff doesn't happen.

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • jezlyn

@edythemighty: I think that's the default thing that the fill in for all the users; that was filled in for me, too. Also, my location was set as Ghana. rolling eyes But as far as the whole "seeking a man" thing, there's no need to get so worked up...

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • edythemighty

They should at least put seeking man and woman ^.~

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • scovir

And they seem to use w3top.org to get the content of Twitter users. (http://www.w3top.org/[Twitter ID])

1 year, 11 months ago by scovir

  • FyreFiend

WTF?! @jezlyn: There is a reason to get worked up about them snagging our usernames, icons, and posts.

I just did a whois on them. They're registered out of Spain and their contact address in on gmail.

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • edythemighty

@Fyrefiend: Now we flood them? ^.^

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • jezlyn

@Fyrefiend: Well, I'm worked up about the fact that they're basically ripping off Jaiku. It was that whole "seeking a man" thing that I was trying to calm @edythemighty down about. :)

But seriously, there's got to be some recourse against sites doing a straight ripoff of Jaiku and Twitter... I think Google needs to take action.

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • edythemighty

    I'm just saying.....why do they assume I'm gay? Can't I be bi?

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • FyreFiend

@edythemighty: I'd like to see what (if anything) Jaiku does about them. In the mean time we can email them at their registration address (bitacle@gmail.com) demanding that they remove our posts and icons (remember, just because it's on the net doesn't mean it's legal to copy it)

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • cybette

heh, my contacts there are not the same ones as on jaiku, i'm seeking a woman, and located in Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Don't mind if the last bit was true though!

1 year, 11 months ago by cybette

  • jezlyn

@edythemighty: laugh What I was saying before was that I think they're saying "seeking a man" no matter what one's gender is. No assumptions, just a blanket generalization. :)

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • jezlyn

@FyreFiend: It wouldn't surprise me if that Gmail account isn't monitored at all. :P

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • FyreFiend

@edythemighty: I just assumed you were too much of a man for one sex (race, species, planet) ;-)

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • edythemighty

Proof that whoever made that site thinks men are the dominant gender? Ah well, I'll probably still shoot them an email from my spam email address ;) Lesse if that increases the spam, eh @jezlyn?

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • edythemighty

    @Fyrefiend: You assumed right :D

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • FyreFiend

    @jezlyn: nor would I but it's worth a shot.

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • jezlyn

@cybette: Well, geeze, I wonder how they're filling in the other stuff. Perhaps it's people who signed up with their site who's following us? Ugh, this is all just really wrong!

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • edythemighty

Ah, they made up our sexual orientations and locations. Not that much of a stretch to conjure up fake users

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • jezlyn

I know, but I'm curious to know whether some of those contacts are actually people who have decided to add me as a contact after they signed up with that site. I don't even understand what the purpose would be. There aren't any ads that I can see, so what's the benefit to them?

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • geovoltoss

sorry to come in late on this one, but I been watching with great interest. I think it does kinda over step the bounds on jaiku users

1 year, 11 months ago by geovoltoss

  • FyreFiend

Fake users would be fine. Copying me is what I have an issue with

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

    @jezlyn: I'd add you ;)

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

that second sentence is a question....we really need to be able to edit our comments :P

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • FyreFiend

Okay, I've done a little more digging. Their site is hosted out of Canada on Groupe iWeb Technologies. We could send complaints to their host about them taking our posts and icons

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • edythemighty

Actually....looking closely now, the picture they have of me is several months old....I've since changed it.....

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • scovir

Bitacle may be getting ad revenue by using the content of others to attract folks to their websites. Use your favorite search engine to look up "Bitacle." Using the content of others is not new to them. I'm surprised how targeted this latest move of theirs was.

1 year, 11 months ago by scovir

  • FyreFiend

@edythemighty: That doesn't change the fact that it's your intellectual property (assuming you didn't pinch it from somewhere)

1 year, 11 months ago by FyreFiend

  • smperris

It was probably only a matter of time before something like this happened. Even before the buy-out, Jaiku posts had a lot of Google juice. It's probably a trivial exercise to scrape content and re-host.

Adsense is sprinkled all over the place so no doubt there's revenue coming in.

1 year, 11 months ago by smperris

  • edythemighty

@Fyrefiend: Hey, if you're gonna be a thief, be a good one! Keep the content up to date XD And yeah, it's my intellectual property. Creative Commons ;)

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • edythemighty

Still, there's similar problems everywhere. And despite Google's best efforts....they DO earn a small piece of revenue themselves from ads....but I still don't like stuff that's mine sprinkled liberally throughout the web without proper attribution :(

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • FyreFiend

Their host's abuse address is abuse@iweb.ca. If you do email their host remember to BE POLITE to them. They are not the thieves, Bitacle is.

They have me in Malawi and seeking a man (I'm neither; I just had to look up Malawi to see exactly where it is). I wonder if they list the same group of friends for everyone; I doubt that I've actually amassed 118 followers there--I'm just not that interesting.

1 year, 11 months ago by captainslim

  • edythemighty

Ah well, nothing left to do but wait and see what "agreement" iWeb comes to with the Bitacle people.

    @edythemighty: Aww shucks...

Man, as if it wasn't bad enough before, now they're copying people's Jaikus and attributing them to a different user name! I just now saw that ChiefTwit and merlyn have other usernames there. GRRRRR...

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • jezlyn

I wish @malach were still working at Jaiku; he'd have noticed this thread very early on...

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • RickMeasham

@jezlyn: I'm not overly sure anyone works here any more .. lots of people at parties, at bars and on busses, but no bugfixes or anything else in weeks and weeks.

1 year, 11 months ago by RickMeasham

  • jezlyn

@RickMeasham: Youch... Well, it seems kind of true, except for the day that Jaiku threw up a bunch of 504 errors and the cache was restarted or whatever to fix it. I was hoping that the period of chaos was going to be followed by a few updates, but the only thing that got updated that day was Google Talk, with newer emoticons and group chat. :P

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • lemonad

I've noticed some back end fixes too, a week ago one of jaiku's php files were suddenly throwing syntax errors and that was fixed in a matter of hours.

On the negative side, I emailed jaiku's support with a list containing the names of hundreds of spam accounts and channels a while back and didn't even get a reply. Channels and accounts are still there.

1 year, 11 months ago by lemonad

  • jezlyn

sigh This is probably one of the side-effects people were worried about when Google bought Jaiku. Unfortunately it seems to be coming true. I hope that after a little while longer of adjustment that the core Jaiku team will be back, but this might be wishful thinking now.

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • smperris

@jezlyn: it depends on whether Google bought Jaiku the product it currently is or Jaiku the future of social mobile web (perfect for Android) or the brains behind Jaiku (I have yet to hear someone who has met Jyri not say "he's the smartest, most switched on guy I have ever met").

My fear is that the reasons Google bought Jaiku are in the reverse order to what they are above and as such Jaiku.com will languish. It already seems to be getting a bit dusty and creaky while the Twitter buzz just keeps on keeping on.

1 year, 11 months ago by smperris

  • RickMeasham

There are times when you really wish you couldn't say "told you so"

1 year, 11 months ago by RickMeasham

  • smperris

Tell me about it. I was so hopeful at the time of purchase that things were only looking up for Jaiku. I'm afraid to say that it is starting to look like I got it totally wrong.

1 year, 11 months ago by smperris

  • RickMeasham

Wow .. we totally derailed this thread :-D

1 year, 11 months ago by RickMeasham

  • smperris

It's a gift I have. I'll bring it back on topic by saying that apparently I am: - from PNG - seeking a man - posting regularly but haven't accessed the site since late October - decided to keep my old photo on xmltop for that "old school" feel - secretly proud that at least I have more followers than @malach (who is from Palau and seeking women, and who are they to resist his snow goggles, huh?)

do you guys want that site to shut down?

quite easy. notify adsence-abuse@google and I bet you will see the adds removed faster then you can even post back here, that you emailed them.

I've done that in the past, on a site that REQUIRED users to click on adds.

took 10 min to google remove the adds.

  • jezlyn

@BUGabundo: I didn't know he was still working for Jaiku. Yay! It's understandable that he's too busy at the moment getting settled in Australia, though.

@jyri: Thanks for replying here. It's nice to know that this thread has gotten some attention. I hope this whole XmlTop thing gets settled soon. Very sleazy to steal Jaiku's content and profit from ad revenue for doing nothing!

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • runningwithbulls

    They are located in Spain.

    http://www.esyurl.com/38a

I'm sure a nice e-mail to them saying stop because you are blatantly scraping others copyright might help.

Jaiku servers are located in EU right? If so, it should be easy(er) to get them to stop.

1 year, 11 months ago by runningwithbulls

  • Bishop

Because, of course, scammers and thieves always back down when you simply ask them politely to stop.

1 year, 11 months ago by Bishop

  • jezlyn

@runningwithbulls: A couple people have already sent e-mails to their ISP (IIRC), so there's that. If it's true that an e-mail to Google's AdSense abuse reporting e-mail address would shut XmlTop down, that would be awesome.

1 year, 11 months ago by jezlyn

  • runningwithbulls

@jezlyn: why would Google AdSense care? (Obviously I am missing something!)

@bishop: it never hurts to be nice at the beginning. If they don't respond, then you blow the crap out of them!

I was involved in something like this before. The site was copying our site blantly. So I suggested e-mailing, or telephoning them, telling them they had 2 hours to pull the site, or else they were being taken to court.

    It worked....just an idea!

1 year, 11 months ago by runningwithbulls

  • edythemighty

@runningwithbulls - RickMeasham, Fyrefiend and I have each separately sent letter to their ISP, iWeb, which is based in Canada about this. The thing is, they are running a scam, presenting content stolen from Jaiku and benefiting from it by running AdSense on the page.

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • Bishop

@running: The way I see it, people like this know they've done something wrong. Politely asking miscreants to be nice is not terribly productive.

It's like politely asking the mugger, "Please don't take my wallet; that would be rude."

1 year, 11 months ago by Bishop

  • Bishop

Threats of force, on the other hand, can do wonders. :)

1 year, 11 months ago by Bishop

  • edythemighty

Such as having their ISP give them a notice to cease their action.

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • runningwithbulls

@ed: true. I didn't think about the AdSense revenue that way...then if thats the case, I guess, yes, AdSense would be right to remove their adwords....I guess then these people have no "real" financial benefit to running the site.

@bishop: true, but if these people want to move server somewhere else, then, they will.

But, if the ISP has been notified then maybe they'll do something. They are, however not located in the US like the ISP is...

1 year, 11 months ago by runningwithbulls

  • edythemighty

The ISP is located in Canada, and they themselves are located in Spain.

This kind of thing has been going on with blogs for quite some time, it sucks. :( Hope the Jaiku team manage to get something done about it.

1 year, 11 months ago by zenith

  • malach

It's been said allready, but I'll say it so y'all get it from the horse's mouth (so to speak). While I'm now in .au and not .nz, and have secured a full time role, I'm still freelancing to Jaiku.

The downside is that I'm staying in a hostel, with expensive and unreliable internet access - so getting online to work is both painful and expensive (unlike now, where I'm sitting on a friend's couch stealing wireless), so I'm not around as much as I'd like to be - and possibly won't be until i sort out somewhere to live, and get 'net access sorted - then you won't be able to get rid of me (just like the old days) :)

@hypocrisy Hi there, well according to this you're a man in Moldova seeking other men. Your image and, I guess I haven't checked, posts have been, essentially, hijacked and added to their site.Kinda like an feed without your permission and changing the info ...

OK, I wrote back to the hosting company requesting further information regarding what they've done. I'm absolutely stunned at the response.

    > The copyright material you refer to is in fact the content of a web site that is being reproduced, according to your claim, by another site without your authorization. > > As we tried to view the original site that contains a legal copy of your copyright material; we found out that a login is required. > > In that sense, if there's any claim to be made for that matter; it should be done by Jaiku. > > Copyright does not protect facts, information, names, or ideas and thus if these are obtained from websites, they can be used and copied without permission or payment of royalties. In fact, as we found out, Jaiku can share your personal information with almost anyone: http://jaiku.com/privacy` > > What copyright protects is the content of a web site which, in this case, belongs to Jaiku.

1 year, 11 months ago by RickMeasham

  • edythemighty

So we have to appeal to Jaiku eh?

1 year, 11 months ago by edythemighty

  • RickMeasham

Of course not. This guy is completely ignorant. If, as he claims, Jaiku has to make the complaint because the information is on their servers, then It is iWeb that is breach of copyright as the information is being republished on their servers.

1 year, 11 months ago by RickMeasham

  • zenith

I'm no legal expert but even I know that's complete crap!

1 year, 11 months ago by zenith

  • edythemighty

Yep. If a login is required, that is pretty much an indicative that the content is meant to stay here unless we promote it through feeds and what not. Or Jaiku decides to feature one of us as featured members or something along those lines. Or worst case scenario, you are being investigated by the police :P But that's a worst case scenario.

I would presume that's their motivation, cause their matchmaking skills suck! :)

My guess is they're amateurs attempting to build a dating microblogging site and they need critical mass. So they've decided that we're their critical mass. They'll copy our content so that once they've got everything working, actual clients will feel like they're not the only ones using the site :-D

I am surprised. This post is 4 days old but there still doesn't seem to be any reaction from Jaiku/Google.

But at least they are informed of it....

    @jpblogger: cf petteri above:

    > we have informed the relevant teams here about this case, and are waiting for the feedback/actions

I wonder how I would go with a man. Is that what they want us to do? Mass change of sexuality? No, the thought made my bum pucker..

Just an update to let you know we're brought this to the attention of the adsense and legal teams at Google.

jyri++ .. thanks .. my latest email to them has not received any response at all (that's the one where by implication, they claim responsibility for the content on their users sites :-D)

Well, living in Monaco can't be that bad, the thing I have a teensy problem with is the 'looking for a man' - I'm fairly sure I'm not, but how can I be sure now?

  • zoetrope

Nah, I still have a problem with men... hairy arses do nothing for me

The Ads team has now revoked ads from XMLTop without payment. These people are apparently repeat offenders.

Hmmm. If you're going to steal content from a site and try to make money with adsense, maybe you should check to make sure that the content source isn't owned by Google. Just a thought...

    I agree with zacharye

Wow that's obnoxious. Wonder how many more times this kind of thing will be attempted...then again, looks like the hive mind will catch them quick.

I seem to originate from lebanon. So it's not really me after all. But I do seem to have a duplicate that says the same things and does the same things. Maybe I'm a Cylon. Luckily I seem to be seeking a woman. Not true, but it does sound better to my heterosexual ears that had they claimed I was seeking a man.
