I think the different train icons are for different trains (e.g. city/commuter, long-haul i.e. Amtrak, etc.) Yeah, I know, that still doesn't make much sense...
How about a little guy wearing a Ninja mask? You have a Pirate flag after all, and the other side of the eternal Ninja vs. Pirate debate must be represented!
If you check the source code (but hey, who does that?!?!) there's a train, a train and a 'metro'. I assume that 'train' means inter-city, and 'metro' means suburban. But let's remove two of them to make room for some more without having a bazillion available!
Good idea Leo .. was thinking that you don't really want it to grow too large .. so 20ish permanent and widely varied .. and a rotation of 100 or so totally random weird crap :) (API developers would probably let you chose from all 120 coz we're nice .. and lazy)
I'd suggest maybe the Thinking Man... or at least something to suggest "contemplative".
And here's an idea: To prevent the icon library from growing too large, why not allow users to customize their library from a larger one? They could go in, select their favorites (for example: It's probably safe to say I'm never going to use the lipstick icon) and when they click the Add Icon link, a box of icons of their own choosing pops up. That way the icon library could be expanded greatly without having to worry about space issues.
I don't mind smileys. I do, however, mind those god-awful stylized ones like AIM uses. Just make them simple, similar to the generic yellow and black smiley faces you see around.

I don't want to see yellow smileys. I don't want 3D smileys. In fact, when I think about it, I don't want faces at all. Expressing frustration as a strait-jacket is much more fun. Happiness is a balloon. Faces are too cliched.
(I'm watching the public feed for the next 8 hours to see which are currently the most used icons .. )

OK, if you have an icon idea and some skills, or you have skills and like someone else's idea, how about putting them to good use and creating your wish-icon. Then we can hassle Jaiku to add them to the rota! Here's the rules-as-I-see-them:
1) It has to be in the correct blue color
2) Is has to fit inside 36x36px (so make it 32px .. none of the existing ones come to the edges)
3) Is has to be generic enough that it would be understood/useful world-wide
4) Is has to be simple (it's an icon, not a Rembrandt)
5) You cannot use any source material for which you don't already own full rights.
6) You have to be prepared to give up all rights to your work to Jaiku.com
