The idea that you will become obsolete in the multimedia world unless you're willing to constantly learn and seek out new ways of thinking as well as be able to pinpoint new audiences and target new trends.
Bernie stresses the need to establish an online profile or a space. This could be anything from flickr to facebook but you need to get out there and social networking is the best tool to do this.
Bernie emphasised on how important it is to create a space or a presence for yourself on the web such as FaceBook, Flickr and so on, where you can display your creative and innovative work to a live audience. This will definitely help your career along the way, whether you're interested in Sound Engineering or Animation, as long as you create an online profile for yourself, where everyone can see some of your work. Also, you will have more employment opportunities because there are many employers and companies searching for people on the net.
I think flexibility was the most important idea Bernie presented. You must be available for flexible hours, flexible to travel to a job for a client, flexibilty to learn and keep up to date with new immerging technologies
I wasn't actually at openCoffee, but I'm here with Bernie in class at the moment discussing connections. How many ways of finding something you want - Everything is Miscellaneous by David Weinberger explores this area a bit, the third order of order. Anyway, after a bit of searching I came across Gabriela Avram's blog which explains more what the above comments are based on..
One has to be always alert and open to new ideas and you have to have time to keep up with all the new ideas and technolagies. you have to get yourself known, preferably through digital means..(eg: joining a web club) and if you have a good idea and you put it out there, the possibilities are endless!
When Bernard was speaking of his earlier years in ireland (1996 I think is what he said) and said, while he was at the Arthouse in templebar in Dublin, media was: suspended images being shown in different lights (some form of prog. mass media I guess)............... anyway it just shows how far and fast media is evolving and mutating in such a short time, what with 'new' media and progressing versions of mass, popular, and didtal media changing and being applied differently all the time

I think he really made the point that you can get a fantastic job just from someone liking a simple idea of yours.

The idea that you have to be flexible and open to new technologies and ideas, in order to stay in the game.

I was struck by Bernie's reiteration of the need for Productivity and Innovation. You need to produce quality work and be innovative in your approach.

@wannita But you need to balance that openness with practicality to actually get any work done.

You can read and see a lot of related things when you develop effective social networking. There's more: http://www.insideview.ie/irisheyes/2007/11/opencoffee-and.html
