I'm debating whether to order an iPhone online to be sure to beat the rush of people who have hacked their phones. I guess I could always sell it later.
Luckily, I'm smart enough to have forwarded my iPhone to my GrandCentral account just before I did this. Won't help the SMS, but at least the voice calls will go somewhere redirectable.
I even just tried manually restoring to 1.0.2, and that fails with a helpful "error (1)". Ugh. Well, I guess I'm iPhone-less until the 2nd or 3rd of october.
Heh - I just realized I could have used my $100 rebate from the now-bricked iPhone to be applied to buying a replacement iPhone. Missed opportunity. Damn. :)
yours got totally bricked? did you just hack it for third party apps or for using other cell carriers? i restored mine yesterday from the third party hack and i get the new firmware today and i have had no problems
I never unlocked it for other SIM cards. I used AppTapp (Installer.app), and installed a dozen apps or so. Two days ago, I did a complete restore back to 1.0.2. The update to 1.1.1 went fine up until the final reboot. Now it wants me to insert a "proper SIM card". I have one! But it doesn't recognize it.
I tried an AppTapp restore as well, after nudged by the iphonedevwiki. Still no go. The good news is that my replacement phone will be at my office on 01 Oct, so I'm out of a phone for only a few days. And I may try to social-engineer a replacement at an Apple or AT&T store tomorrow.
I went to the local store (the one I will be working at shortly). AT&T's response will be to send you to the Apple Store for a loaner, which you will probably have to pay for, don't know what. One of the guys working tonight hadn't sync'd his phone today, and I told him about the mass brickings. Even he said, "Then I'll have to make a trip to Village Point (Omaha Apple Store)".
The new "downgrade to 1.0.2" instructions also didn't work for me. I think I have 1.0.2 again (yellow triangle), but I have the bozo IMEI number, so I can't reactivate my phone. Bleh.
My new iphone accepted the old SIM card, so my account was transferred properly, after clicking around a bit to "activate" the new phone. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the old iBrick.
I heard that on previously-unlocked iPhones , the IMEI or ICCID (I forget which, basically it is the unique electronic "serial number" embedded in each GSM cellular device) gets screwed up, and this screwing-up prevents the Apple software from recognizing it. Or something like that. My brain is pretty much melted to goo at this time, long busy tiring weekend and all.
Hopefully the iPhoneDevTeam will release their unlock soon, and that it will correct these weirdo IMEI's. Meanwhile I suppose you could use it as an iHockeyPuck... Or if you get stranded on a desert island, you can use its shiny glass surface as a reflector to signal passing planes... :(

with expedited delivery, they say oct 1-3, so I'll be on my old "plain" cell phone and video-screen iPod until then.

Erm. Why didn't you wait for the relocking utility before updating? Did you not listen to MacBreak Weekly? :)

I had never unlocked my phone. I had used AppTapp to install a bunch of stuff, but I did a restore a few days ago.

maybe the sim is just bad not the phone itself
2 years, 1 month ago by jrhitterman
When I pull the sim entirely, I still get "error (1)" when trying to restore the phone, even to 1.0.2. So, it's bricked, badly.

NAPTOWNMAN on a Gizmodo Question of the day post claimed that he had an unmod iPhone and had issues with installing 1.1.1. He claims he had a download for hack on his harddrive but never installed. After deleted the files, he was able to restore the phone. May be something to try.

@merlyn been reading about your troubles man - so sorry! I thought I was reverting to a fresh 1.0.2, but I've got 1.1.1 and it seems ok so far

indeed. that's why I keep saying "bozo IMEI". It's that wierd one that everyone knows means "dude, you smacked this phone around".
