I replied from within GTalk (not least to check that imbot was actually working) using the format <channel> <user> <message>. If that's not correct, I'd appreciate a heads-up?

... using the format -channel- -user- -message- (where "-" is purely a delimiter)
don't do # @.. just one is enough! @ will reply to user. # will OPEN NEW post in #
"@hult -- seems to working for me okay" was enough
Thanks for the tip @BUGabundo -- I tried to reply using just your id but the imbot is now offline for me! :)
