I found this movie was scary on a few levels. There was the obvious special effects and the scary dramatic music throughout.then there was the use of an evil looking BUNNY called Frank. The fact that Donnie is a teenager from a typical american family was .There are a few times in Darko that I felt were reinforcing the fact that this was a scary Movie, There was a Halloween Party,The movie he went to was "The Living Dead".Although this movie was confusing at times I think I got my head around it, in part at least, but would like to see it again.
The scariest aspect of this movie is that a young boy feels that because the whole world doesn't understand him he is forced to carry out his violent and disturbing actions through the commands of his imaginery bunny friend Frank. The boy is clearly troubled and disturbed.
When two worlds collide the fear is real. In Donnie Darko many worlds are portrayed that to me will instill fear for the movie audience at a very basic level. From the start, within the first 6 minutes, Donnie is said to be “on medication” which is inferred as insanity or instability at the very best. Where sanity starts and stops is left up to the audience to decide because as the film progresses Donnie has his moments of clarity and wisdom. The school teacher holds the path of true purity with all other views being evil or wrong. How sane are we? The director, Richard Kelly, uses these basic fears that we all hold to good effect to scare the audience from within themselves without using the big in your face graphical image scare tactics. Feel the fear, the fear is real.
I really didn't get this film, I found it a real dark film. To me the scare factor is the mental health of Donnie, and "What more could he be capable of doing?".
I must say I enjoyed the not knowing of the film and the many twist and turns. What scared me was the way the women from the PTA was prepared to stand up for a pedophile. This is something which might not be fiction.
Also did anyone else identify with donnie ? Maybe it's just me I'm big on anti hero's.
Or do we have a Frank fan ? either one is better than anyone else in the movie.
Did anyone else notice the reference to E.T. it's my favorite movie of all time.
Maybe everyone has missed a point here. Is the complete film based around the very last moments of Donnies life has he lays crushed under the aircrafts engine, these the very last seconds as his life ebbs away?
Perhaps he wasn't insane at all, was his mother realy on the same plane that lost the engine because she is standing by the tree as the mess is getting cleared away. How did she get there from the airport so soon?
Well, I never got scared while watching it, but i did find the bunny extremly creepy. So creepy in fact, that i will never sleep peacefully in the same house as a rabbit again! As well as this, I also found the fact that Donnie was so easily won over by Frank very frightening, to me it is a very frightening concept indeed.
I think the point of the movie is to take whatever you want from it. I don't think that there is only one side to the story. You can take what you want from it. Did Donnie die under the plane engine? Who know's but it was fun watching.
