Just installed Ubuntu on my desktop and love it. Suggestions for a thin, light older model alptop I can stick it on?

Hi! My boyfriend and I downloaded Ubunto to a laptop and we've been trying to hook it up to my wireless router. Have you tried to do anything like that? If so, did you have any trouble? Thank you :)
hahaha. Ubuntu is a notorious pain in the you know what for wireless. I'm going to give it another crack, though. Still have never gotten it working... the more you try, the more you can mess things up. I'm going to try a fresh install and start with better info.
Thanks for the imput, shaydaims. That's really disappointing, though. If you get wireless to work, please let me know. Do you know of any other Linux systems that do well with wireless?
I know MANY people who have wireless working with Ubuntu. There are a lot of factors involved, such as card type and driver availability. The general procedure is to get a program called NdisWrapper, which will "wrap" a windows driver and make it work in Linux. However, there are increasingly more wireless drivers written for Linux. I was just making sure that you knew that trying how to's on installing wireless in Ubuntu can be dangerous. Do a LOT of research, because once you start changing settings as root, the situation can get worse and worse... until like me, you have a wonderful working copy of Ubuntu, and never use it because you can't function without wireless connectivity (TG I set mine up as a dual boot!).
Thank you, again. I'm going to talk with my boyfriend, who's really the brains behind the whole "Install Ubuntu" mission and see what he says. I know he said the card type is a huge factor. I hope we can get it working--I want to be one of the Lin Leet!
using ubuntu on 8 yr old gateway laptop that came with win98 .... never have looked back ... not a geek by any means and have had no problem using wifi- or other configs in general- slap in the live cd and see what works and what doesn't. repeat as needed. ;)
Thank you, dougsmith. My b-friend's gonna work on it a little more this weekend. I'm not sure why he can't get the wifi to work...without the wifi, though, the computer's pretty much dead to me--no internet and no access to the networked hard drive!
Munk, did you have trouble with wifi? We used both my 7 year old Dell Inspiron (I think it has a pentium 4, and I don't remember what the mhz, but it's low) and we used his Toshiba laptop (I don't know the specs, but it's supposed to be more nifty than mine). I'm not the techie (I wish I could do stuff like that)--my boyfriend is the one in charge of the project, and he almost threw the laptop across the room 'cause he couldn't get wifi to work. I'll ask him what the main problem was.

I always like thinkpad and you can probably get quite decent deal for X40 model which is one model older than the current one.
