Looking at the time-scale, 2 years until it's available, is there a reason for that, isn't that giving the competitors a chance to overtake?
Nigel Clifford: This doesn't represent a pause, we're still pushing forward in the meantime and also working on cleaning their 7million lines of code and use of third-party software before it gets migrated to open source
Clarification needed, is it the IPR that's getting put into the foundation? How many operating systems would you like to see in the future and do you see the Symbian platform being the leader?
In the foundation we are able to use the source code, the employees stay in Nokia.
And the IPR?
Nigel Clifford: IPR means less in the environment they're moving into, the foundation will have a defined purpose
Kai Öistamö: Will also be guided by the Eclipse license
About the second question
Guido Arnone: Started a programme a while ago, decided to stay with open platforms Symbian and S60. This move will simply the challenges and align a platform to build upon, and stands a very good chance of leading.
When do you think the first device will be out using the new platform?
Kai Öistamö: Shades of grey on this, everything you develop today. All foundations members will get the software 1H2009, All integrated components will be available over the next 2 years.
Nigel Clifford: All of the assets (S60, UIQ, MOAP(S)) are already working together now, so it's already there.
Webcast Question: Why did Nokia have to buy the shares? Why didn't the other shareholds just contribute their side of things?
Kai Öistamö: This was the discussed best way forward for the group, for Nokia this is also a good investment, to which they're looking for a very good return.
Isot kiitokset @dsample:lle! Woah, this was a development I didn't quite expect... The real question is what will be Nokia's Linux strategy when the open-source Symbian platform emerges. Marginal? A kind of symbiosis where Symbian still dominates for years to come? Also will the community step forward to de-tangle the rather opaque (so I'm told) Symbian platform wrt docs, interfaces and programming practices?

What's the current royalty rates and how do they compare to other platforms:
Nigel Clifford: Symbian around $5, can't comment on other providers

What will this mean for employees at S60 in Nokia
Kai Öistamö: Symbian employees will become Nokia employees, then we will plan towards the end of the year how to use the fantastic unique talents

Is it just to get Microsoft out of the market
In short, the answer is no, it's a big move to an open source ecosystem for the platform. Will it make the platform more competitive? Yes, certainly.

Are Nokia in the driving seat because of the acquisition?
In the beginning, yes, but it's all being contributed into the new non-profit organisation, so overall, no.

Comparing to the Android movement, is that why it's happening?
No, people are actually using the devices already (200m), that's what's brought it together.

What about security?
Tommi Uhari: Open source and security are not mutually exclusive, lots of good things have been done in this way.

Webcast question: how will the foundation make sure they're giving back to the community?
Nigel Clifford: Giving 7million lines of code for starters, huge amount of innovation going to happen with it.
Alain Mutricy: It's the biggest contribution anyone's made.

What about developer communities like Forum Nokia?
Kai Öistamö: It's up to the manufacturers what they do with their communities.
