So let's talk Moleskines! :) What do people think about the City Notebooks? I haven't had a chance to get one for Chicago (I live in the area) yet, not sure if it's even out yet.
@jezlyn: what are the City Notebooks? My only exposure to moleskines is the small lined one I have (I forget what it's called but it's little bigger than a 3x5 index card).
sorry - did not mean to comment that here. I have the SF version - from a Nokia event. It's nice, but designed as an organizer. I'd prefer if it was just a blank one after the city content which is nice.
The form factor of the B5 size just works. A lot of creative designers grew up with Moleskines so having one in your pocket is like a secret handshake in some circles.
I've heard that the maps aren't the most useful, but it's nice to have a set of them in your travel journal. :)
@runningwithbulls: Some part of the appeal is a bit hyped and "cultish", but in a moderate fashion. :) Actually, for me, I really like the quality of the paper, and the simple design. I like having the pocket-sized ones around for list-making, taking notes from magazines I flip through, or book recommendations, etc. They can open flat so that it's easier to write on. There are probably other journal-type notebooks out there that are similar in quality to Moleskines now, but for me, it's just easier to stick to a known brand in this case. I love to use pigment ink pens (various brands found in art supply stores, my current favorite being Sakura Micron Pigma, IIRC) on the Moleskine pages; leaves a nice dark line with no bleeding, fast-drying as well.
Oh yeah, plus there's that neat little "secret" pocket inside the back cover of Moleskines that are useful for putting scraps of paper, money, etc. into.
Forgot to mention that I use a pocket-sized Moleskine Memo Pockets (there is a larger one) as my wallet. You can see pics of it here:
I keep my credit and debit cards and cash in the front-most pocket, then my other important cards, like insurance, and those membership cards for Costco/Sam's in the next. Receipts and other similarly important papers go into the next pocket, and the remaining ones are filled with miscellaneous stuff, like bank deposit slips, some Post-It Notes.
The expandable shape of the Memo Pockets allows me to keep a lot of stuff in a relatively small space. It does get a bit fat from all the receipts and stuff, but it stays manageable.
WOW! So many replies after my one comment! And on the same day! It is always great to meet fellow enthusiasts. And I agree, when you meet someone else with a moleskine, it's like a secret handshake. Glad to meet everyone.
@jezlyn The map in my Paris city moleskine was extremely useful. Especially the metro map. In fact, there was a funny moment when a French woman walked up to me to ask for directions. I took out my Moleskine and used the map :) I'm uploading photos of my Paris city Moleskine book to Flickr tonight. A bit overdue.
Moleskine's are great, I love mine. I mostly use the pocket notebooks, but I picked up a diary for next year and a reporters notebook too. Wish they were a touch cheaper though. :)
@zenith: I find that it takes me quite a while to fill up my Moleskines because I don't always use them (just keep them handy in my bag for when I do need them), so the cost isn't so bad for me. But yeah, if I wrote in one every day as a journal, or if I had any artistic talent and did daily sketches/paintings in the Moleskines, I think I would start to balk at the cost (but still buy them). :)
I think I should take some pictures of the 1 1/2 I've filled up... I also recently took one of the new city notebooks with me to Berlin, the map & subway plan came in really handy! :D

@all: ok, a small question - why are moleskin diaries/notebooks so popular? I like the covers, but I still don't see why they are so popular.
Not a troll question, just curious.
thanks

@smperris: The City notebooks have maps for the city, plus a bunch of differently formatted pages for taking notes during your trip:

I don't use them daily either, but fairly regularly. But yeah, I still buy them anyway, despite the cost. They're just so darn nice. :)
