That would depend largely on your make of card, I've never had to use ndiswrapper but I've always had Intel wireless cards which just work, I've been very lucky.
@charlie I find Network Manager in Gnome very easy to use but there should be a KDE equivalent you can use, I'm not really up on KDE so can't give you a name though sorry. Doubt it's KDE that's the problem
@Techsyslonghorn: Well, it's just fine for me. It's pretty similar to the default. I like how the options are quickly available from the "seen networks" window or whatever it's called.
I had to use it because for whatever reason Ibex simply would not connect to our WPA2 network. Hardy yes, Ibex no. There were a number of people on ubuntuforums.org that had this problem.
Installing wicd fixed it. I didn't even had to re-enter the passphrase as that is apparently stored in a common location.
lol well it was a total ID10T error... for some reason buntu doesnt recognize the on off switch on the card. I left the switch in the on position and restarted... and blamo I'm up and running when it restarted.

Maybe the same problem I had with Ibex wireless? Solution was to dump the default manager and use wicd.
