Making progress
May 30th, 2008
Recently a bunch of you have been ruminating about the fate of Jaiku. We know. It is frustrating. We believe the migration to Google App Engine will result in improved stability, so we made the hard call to invest all of our effort in finishing up the port rather than do what was needed to keep up our old servers up to date (it is hard to keep up a service of this scale with 1GB RAM…).
Also, contrary to some voices out there, we DO have plans for future development and we will involve our developer community as much as we can. Just to reiterate, we are working very hard to ensure you have a useful and usable service. We feel the short term pain, too. Thanks for sticking with us!
PhoneBoy Says:
Hey Jyri, any word on making the current “inner circle” client public? Seems pretty stable to me.

Anders Sporring Says:
Good to hear!
yes there’s been a lot of rumors and I think the best thing is to be very clear about the future. As an extremly frequent user of Jaiku I’m really a fan and it has also proven to be a valuebel tool for getting new connections.
Keep up the good work fellows!

It’s great to hear that things are in the works and I’m looking forward to seeing Jaiku progress ever further.
The switch to Google Apps Engine went incredibly smoothly which is admirable. Well done guys.

it’s pity the service is the very same it was a year ago. Basically you can’t see the development. And, the aggregation just does not work.

OMG! It’s alive! Thank you Jyri for the update and the good news. We are patient, but can’t wait to see all that coming. ;)

Thanks for the update Jyri – sounds like exciting times ahead! I’m really looking forward to the new, improved, Jaiku :)

Ricky Says:
Agreed, thanks for the update, and I’d like to echo someone else’s sentiment that a one-liner update to the #jaiku channel once a week or every other week even would be helpful. Even just a ‘we just completed one step, things are moving good’ would go a long way.

Max Christian Hansen Says:
And just who, do you think, is sticking with you?
I put in another request for an account today, just because it’s become habit. But I’ve been waiting so long for Jaiku to move from fantasy to reality that when and if it comes, I’ll almost certainly have given up. I now have a fine group of followers and followees on Twitter. I see no compelling reason why I’ll move if you ever actually offer a service.

Rogister Says:
Y’know, usually I’m pretty easy going too, but many of you above are IMO being way too kind to Jaiku/Google. Frankly, they are laughing in your face. To begin with current users, including long-time users like myself, are non-relevant and it shows. No updates on what’s happening unless they are forced (as the post above was), terrible reliability problems, I don’t use txt but that is apparently non-functional, RSS feed fetching is appallingly unreliable, I could go on…
Yet you notice what has never failed to function just fine? The ads. Strange that, no?
Jaiku/Google have totally lost all credibility. What they have been doing for months now is the equivalent of any of us putting up a site and writing on it “Here is going to be a really great service - you are going to love it! Meanwhile, while you wait with no news (sorry too busy to bother with letting you know the state of progress with our Great! New! Service!) please just stay here for as long as you can as…here! Are! Some! Really! Great! Ads! Bye, see you one day - maybe!”.
That’s how it is. It’s surprising just how appalling Jaiku has become over these last months - not only because who would have guessed that either the Jaiku guys or Google would have stooped this low.
But they have, don’t kid yourselves you are a ‘valued supporter’ as you clearly are not of any value whatsoever.
Google has, I assume, big plans for Jaiku, probably involving their new phone O/S. Present Jaiku users are not relevant in the big scheme of things.
They would have been more honest and have retained at least some credibility and respect if they had just shut the site down at the time of the buyout and just left a message “We’ll be back!”.
Too late now, though.

Payton Says:
Hi guys!! Well, I’m bugging you here because I couldn’t find a place where I was able to write to get some help. Here’s the two thing: about 6 days ago, I was no longer able to update from SMS. And when I logged in two days ago, I wasn’t able to see my own page (http://payton.jaiku.com) and today, I could see it while I wasn’t logged in. Then I logged in, posted an update and then got again a 504 error. It’s all detailed here: http://jaiku.com/channel/jaiku/presence/36373898. I know you’re into other things to worry about just now, but I really love Jaiku, and I want it fully functional.
Thanks beforehand!

Steve from AAS here. Anyone know if GPS support has made it into the new Jaiku client? I believe that’s crucial (e.g. where your contacts are EXACTLY)….
If the programming team would like to fire me over a beta….?

Mike Bogle Says:
Thanks for the update - I’m really happy to hear that things are still moving forward. Now would be an excellent time to open things up to more widespread account creation if possible because there are a lot of disgruntled Twitter users looking for a viable alternative. I think Jaiku definitely delivers there.
Cheers,
MIke

Is Jaiku Still Around? | Jeffro2pt0 Says:
[…] As it turns out, Jaiku is still around. In a blog post published on the official Jaiku blog on May 30th, Jyri reminded folks that Jaiku is still alive and well and that moving the service into the Google App Engine has taken much longer than anticipated. Jyri also mentioned that they do in fact have plans for future development. What that future development might be is anyone’s guess. […]
