We’re joining Google
October 9th, 2007
Exciting news: Google has bought Jaiku today.
What does that mean? First and foremost, we’re of course continuing to support our existing users. So fear not: your Jaiku phone, the Web site, IM, SMS, and API will continue to work normally.
That said, new user sign-ups have been limited for the time being. The idea here is to enable our team to get right to work with Google’s engineers on delivering a new, better service to you as quickly as we can instead of spending our efforts on optimizing the current back-end. Existing users will still be able to invite their friends, and those who are not yet on Jaiku can send us a request for an invitation to join.
We’ve put together a short FAQ about the acquisition, and we’ll continue to provide support on the #jaiku channel. But we’re eager to go beyond what’s there today, and build something completely new for you to enjoy. Take this as an invitation to join us on a journey to reinvent how you communicate and stay in touch with the people you care about.
Jyri, Petteri, and team

Gadgetophile » Google acquires Jaiku. Who’s cool now? Says:
[…] In a somewhat unexpected move, Google has purchased Jaiku, one of the myriad online messaging/presence/mobile applications. I imagine all the Twitter cool kids are wondering why they were left out. As a long-time Jaiku user, I can say that I find the Jaiku paradigm and interface infinitely more useful than Twitter. This sucks! I used Jaiku chiefly because it was independent from any of the big guys- Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. Google has a history of acquiring companies and then letting them just sit and wither. Now that you’ve closed new registrations (and apparently won’t give me invites for my friends), the growing social aspect of your service is dead.

It is more surprising that they bought Jaiku rather than twitter. Jaiku does not have the buzz that twitter has, but it does have a large number of folks, and people who use the process. Jaiku is pretty cool in its own right but does not have the user ecosystem or massive number of applications that twitter has. That said, new user sign-ups have been limited for the time being. Google Grabs Jaiku Says:
[…] The “activity stream and presence sharing service” Jaiku has been snapped up by Google. Technology has made staying in touch with your friends and family both easier and harder: living a fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle is easier (and a lot of fun), but it’s more difficult to keep track of everyone when they’re running around at warp speed. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ve acquired Jaiku, a company that’s been hard at work developing useful and innovative applications for staying in touch with the people you care about most — regardless of whether you’re at a computer or on a mobile phone. […] … But Is The World Ready For Mobile Lifestreaming? (Or Microblogging? Or Presence Management?) October 9th, 2007 at 10:43 pm So it looks like Google bought the ‘other’ ambient broadcasting / lifestreaming / presence management / microblogging tool, Jaiku today. Mind, like Mat Ingram, I haven’t actually tried Jaiku, but from all accounts it has a great many similarities to Twitter, although up until now, a fraction of the buzz (and possibly userbase as well, if some imperfect measures are made). […]

Google Buys Jaiku — TechFires Says:
[…] This is hot off the press today. Jaiku announced that they are being snatched-up by the Google meisters. It’s a bit surprising or perhaps brilliant is a better word. Jaiku, essentially a lesser-known version of Twitter has been more on the fringe, now for a price certainly lower than the cost of acquiring Twitter is now being brought into the fold. Jaiku temporarily has closed their doors to new sign-ups. Never fear however, just leave comment and I’ll shoot you over one of my last ones. […]
