Welcome to the new Jaiku!

Jaiku_S603rdEd.jpgWe’re launching a new release of Jaiku today at O’Reilly Emerging Telephony 2007 in San Francisco.

The Web site at www.jaiku.com now shines with a new design, and the much-awaited Jaiku Mobile Beta for Nokia S60 3rd Edition phones is also available for free download as of today.

In addition to just savoring the new look and feel on jaiku.com, you can now:

  • Browse your friends’ contacts, so you can more easily discover new people
  • Subscribe to selected feeds from a contact, so you can filter out any irrelevant content get only the updates you want to follow
  • Customize your background, so you can design your Jaiku to reflect your style
  • Receive updates pre-grouped, so your contacts don’t flood your Overview if they post multiple photos, bookmark a whole bunch of Web pages, or listen to a lot of music

The new Jaiku Mobile Beta brings your phone’s contact list to life. The main features are:

  • The live contact list works just like your phone’s built-in phonebook, and enhances the list with the buddy icons and real-time presence of your Jaiku contacts
  • Post new Jaikus and have them immediately appear on the Web and your contacts’ phones
  • Share your availability based on your phone’s ring profile
  • Share your location based on free naming of cell towers
  • Option to share your phone calendar (choose to share full titles of events or just when you are free/busy)
  • Option to share number of nearby people based on detection of Bluetooth phones
  • Switch Jaiku online or offline at any time
  • Easy wizard guides you through the setup
  • Automatic roaming detection alerts you when you are roaming away from your home network
  • Improved battery life gives you more standby time (for best results we recommend switching your phone to 2G mode).

Here’s a list of the supported phone models. If your phone is not on the list, stay tuned: we’re experimenting with some cool new SMS functionality, and we’ll also be releasing a Java edition of Jaiku Mobile soon.

Give it a go! And of course of course of course, feel free to let us know what works and where there’s still room for improvement.

    Hello..

This really works, and it looks beautiful! You just saved my day ;)

  2. Victoria Says:

Great to see so many functional updates, am looking forward to seeing them all.

Some of the interface changes seem like a retrograde step, mind. Adding icons to posts (which is something I really like about Jaiku) now is less intuitive and moving the location field away from the post area just takes it out of sight and out of mind. The location was persistent before, so there’s no benefit to the change.

Also the colours and all the funny speech bubbles around comments make the interface look really fussy. I preferred the old clean style, it was much easier to read. The background to this blog looks broken too.

  3. Victoria Says:

Oh, and I can’t actually use the “post” box to enter a post right now. I got to the end of the number of characters and now it won’t let me delete anything I wrote in the box to amend the post.

Come on guys, this hasn’t even been tested. Can’t we have an option to retain the old look and feel in our new “preferences” section??

  4. Eric Wahlforss Says:

Wow. Can’t wait to try the new S60 beta.

  24. Sean Says:

any guess as to how long before the java version of jaiku mobile will be available?

  25. Ricky Cadden Says:

One thing I’d like to see is a way for Jaiku to search my existing contacts and match them up by phone number to Jaiku contacts. For instance, I have Darla Mack as a contact in my regular list, but also as a Jaiku contact. Currently she shows up twice. It’d be better if Jaiku would integrate itself with my current contacts.

  26. Sorosh Tavakoli Says:

Really nice thing you got here, totally addictive! I just can’t get my contacts photos up on the contact list. I use a Nokia N73. Is it supposed to get that from the web or how does it work?

    /Sorosh

  27. Raimo van der Klein Says:

    works fantastic. Very impressed!

  28. Raimo van der KLein Says:

    Hi,

Looks like my contacts are not synced in my appliction(no correct presence, nor complete friends list). Is this correct?

  29. Raimo van der KLein Says:

Another question: Can’t you integrate Twitter? So that the Streams of my Twitter contacts are in my Jaiku account..just by adding one RSS…

Too bad that my Jaiku posts can’t be added to my Twitter stream..

  30. Raimo van der KLein Says:

    Never mind the last post..hehe

  31. Jim Davies Says:

Great site, lots of fun. I hope this is a good way of getting word to the developers.

A few things are preventing me from going mobile with Jaiku. The SMS address is international for me and it turns out my provider, Sprint, charges extra for international SMS messages. On top of that my the java client when it’s available won’t allow me to use “predictive English” on my phone from what I understand. (could be wrong here but I understand it’s a java client thing). Besides, no java client yet anyway.

A couple things I would love to see that would help. A method of sending updates by email. Now days email in phones is very common. Also a mobile specific form for submitting updates from web enabled mobile devices would help and could be done relatively quickly. Trying to submit an update through the main page on a mobile phone is terrible and I get really mixed results. I suspect results will vary by phone and carrier.

I look forward to seeing where Jaiku goes next.

  32. Duncan Sample Says:

This is fantastic! Much nicer to use than Twitter. One thing that might be nice to add to the mobile client is the icons on new posts, or even an addition to the settings online to add filters for ‘auto-iconning’ (eg. something like [flight|flying] would put the plane icon next to any post with either of those words in it)

  33. Dan W Says:

Sigh, I was looking forward to using Jaiku on my E61 but it wont work. It gets to the “Select access point” screen during setup and wont list all the lovely wifi access points I’ve set up on my phone. Other applications have no trouble using the built in wifi instead of 3G, why has jaiku got to be so awkward?

  34. Teemu Says:

Dan W, we have deliberately excluded Wifi access points, because they cause problems for always-on usage of Jaiku. We’ll introduce WiFi support later.

  35. Spongefile Says:

    Comments on the phone app:

Would be nice if the posts from my phone would include my specific location?

Also I’m under the impression that to see who is “Nearby” I’ve got to keep Bluetooth on. Would it be possible to share your customized location markers (Kamppi, etc) with friends, so when you’re near the same cell tower, it alerts you? It would also dynamically increase location markers for you–maybe you could edit the ones you don’t want away through the web interface. Bluetooth is a bit of a pain, and a potential security risk.

Also I’m assuming that someday we’ll see our own personal Jaiku Overview list on the phone, and be able to comment on a friend’s Jaiku? Otherwise you have to keep checking each person one by one all the time to see what’s going on.

Would also be nice if the Jaikus would scroll by if they’re longer than the screen width, so you can read them without clicking the specific person.

p.s. I like you better than Twitter already.

  36. Teemu Says:

Spongefile, your posts should include your specific location from phone. If it doesn’t show up correctly, then it’s a bug. Can you give a URL to post that should include location but doesn’t, we will check what’s wrong with it.

“People Nearby” is indeed using Bluetooth. We might enable alerts and location based browsing of people in future. Even better, when we publish our APIs, people can write alert systems of their own!

Commenting and overview of personal and friends’s Jaikus is currently under development, you can soon start to hold your breath… ;-) It’s a killer.

  37. Spongefile Says:

    @Teemu:

    http://spongefile.jaiku.com/presence/516535
sent that one from my phone from Home, Helsinki, Finland.

Another thing that occurs to me is that it would be nice if my coworkers/parents could get updated on my whereabouts at certain times, but not all the time. (my friends might meet me at the bar after work, but does my employer need to know?) And maybe they don’t need to read all my jaikus directed at my friends. Flickr-style private/friends/family/public filtering also someday perhaps?

    Re: API + killer app–wooo!

    >holding breath

  38. darren Says:

ive been noticing the timestamps of all my postings have been off a few hours since jaiku went offline thursday morning.

stuff that i posted 10 minutes ago is listed as being posted 3hours 10minutes ago - this happens as far as i can see only with postings from the mobile app. things posted from the website have the proper time stamp.

sort of messes up my presence stream as the order of things can get messed up.

  39. Spongefile Says:

Same has been happening to me.

  40. charliebrown Says:

Hi all, is there a way yo hide the “Jaiku Tools” icon? I don’t want to have two icons for one application… :-)

  41. darren Says:

also, some way to submit bugs would be appreciated rather than on here - or complaining in ones own stream :) or adding comments onto jaiku staffs postings. perhaps a #bug group?

  42. timo kauppinen Says:

I need also some other way to communicate the bug reports, feature requests etc.
(btw, with N76 the SensorRunner is crashing often with cbase44).

  43. Spongefile Says:

    bugs@jaiku.com works, but I like Darren’s idea of a #bug group..

  44. cyberjack Says:

Any chance you’ll support mobile on WM5 pocket pc’s (like Dell Axim)…

  48. jesterie Says:

As Dan W said, bring on the WiFi. I also have the E61 and it is a much needed part of the app especially when people are in work and at home, or even in the cafe with the friendly open WiFi :o)

  49. Shane Says:

I’ve had Jaiku Mobile running on my N95 for a week now, and I love it but… it’s killing my battery in just over half a day!

With minimal phone calls, no other apps running, no wifi usage etc, my N95 is beeping low battery by 3pm. Uninstalled, same scenario and my battery is one digit down by 5pm.

Yes I am using 3G. No I can’t use 2G as I am on a 3G only network and I am charged $1.65/MB to roam onto the 2G carrier.

    Any help?

One other thing - when you fix the above, can you update the app to support suspending data when roaming? ShoZu supports this so it would be great to have to ensure I don’t have to pay huge data costs.

    Thanks,
    Shane.

  50. laserone Says:

I’m w/ Dan. PLEASE allow us to use the WiFi. My Nokia N80 uses wifi and all my phone apps allow me to use the wifi, but not Jaiku. I don’t want to pay my cell company one extra penny when I have free wifi right here. Puh-leez! :)
