Developers, developers, developers…

osx2.jpgIt is not even 2007 yet, but we decided to take a huge risk and already name Peter Rukavina the Unofficial Jaiku Member of the Year (UJMotY). In addition to reporting a number of bugs and suggesting a lot of improvements to the service, he has implemented a cool experimental Jaiku client for OSX. Take a look at it here.

Note that we haven’t yet opened any official APIs, but we plan to do so early next year. If you are a developer interested in playing around with Jaiku (either the Web service or the mobile client), don’t hesitate to contact us for example by emailing me at petteri at jaiku.com. We will provide early access to the APIs to the first interested ones.

When you are thinking of APIs, please try to keep them as simple as possible — preferably REST instead of SOAP.

    Cool app!!!
But [I just wonder] what it is the interest of knowing what your contacts do all the time. Why is so important social awareness

…or preferibly just simple XML instead of Rest.
    …and maybe a JSON wrapper… ;)
I know developers are such picky people :P

    I may make a few suggestions? :)
    1. Make suggestions box, mail, contact… easier. I looked around in this blog, profiles, about and more and I didn’t find anything. It’s 3.45AM, but… it have to be as simple as possible, don’t you think?

    2. I know you’re not the ones to address but… a Dashboard Widget could be a life changer (at least for your service). I would have dropped Twitter if a widget didn’t exist.

    3. Make a simple, clean, customizable personal page somewhere, maybe the home. One of the good point about Twitter (I know, you are getting too much of this) is that you can in some ways customize your page. But SIMPLE ways. Background, colors. Nothing more. And on an uncluttered page. Jaiku could be a GREAT lifelog service.

Folletto: Great suggestions, a few comments below:

We are currently experimenting with JSON, mainly because it is so easy using Python (and I love the clarity of the spec, even combined with basic XML). JSON and something XML-based could be the way to go, but let\’s see.

    1. I agree! For some reason (hey, I\’m only the co-founder, this is out of my league :-), we\’ve been slow with this, but an easy way of giving feedback / connecting to us is \”Coming Soon\” as they say in Hollywood. Meanwhile, please use e.g. bugs AT jaiku DOT com or email us directly.

    2. Once we have the APIs open, we naturally encourage third-party developers to implement exciting ways of connecting to Jaiku\’s data (and most likely implement some ourselves). Since we all have Macs, Dashboard Widget sounds/is a must.

    3. Coming. Someday also to the mobile. BTW, do you feel there is too much clutter on some Jaiku page(s)? What would you like to get rid off?
