New site launched
November 7th, 2006
The new site is out! It introduces a new language for communicating presence.
Presence is about everyday things as they happen - what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, where you’re going. We’re enabling people to connect with the others they care about by sharing presence updates on the Web and mobile.
Here’s what you can do on Jaiku:
1. Start a presence stream:
- Post presence updates
- Add icons to your messages
- Set your location
- Add your Web feeds
2. Add contacts, get their updates
- Find your friends
- Get an overview of their latest updates
- Exchange comments
3. Use Jaiku from your phone:
- Text presence updates from any phone
- Or, download the new Jaiku Mobile to your Nokia S60 smartphone
Give it a spin and let us know what you think!
Jarek Says:
Great work! Images on the contact list are awesome :)
I explore new features… Flickr, RSS feed…
But is it normal that Jaiku disconnect every time when it’s idle?
Or is it my internet connection problem?
In earlier version Jaiku maintan connection… I don’t have fixed-rate data plan…
Best regards,
Jarek

Jarek: Thanks for the comment. Jaiku Mobile maintains the connection unless the user selects Jaiku > Disconnect from Options. The dropping is likely to be caused by breaks in network coverage such as changing between two cells - a problem that may have to do with your operator in that particular area. If the problem persists, please send us an email to bugs [at] jaiku dot com with the model of your phone and we’ll look into it. Thanks!

Dear Jaiku!
I would like to utilize your service somehow for keeping time of my working activities. I work in several research projects and have to deal with a mess of all different types of work tasks, of which I have to keep track.
Could Jaiku make this somehow easier or more convenient? :)
And another wish: Please, make “Latest from you” AJAX and filterable by type of event. :)
All the best,
Ville

Ville: Thanks for the suggestions. You can use the icons to categorize your activities - although the current set is limited. We’re playing with various ideas including user-defined icons/categories. We’ll also continue improving the presence update roll.

A “Jaiku community” presence/zeitgeist would be nice, a simple box with numeral/textual/visual data about Jaiku. Ie. total number of registered users (like Skype had), “active users”, etc.
All kinds of niceties can be easily done depending on what kinda data you collect/mine.. :) And naturally this idea can be easily turned into a zeitgeist/activity monitor of your personal “Jaiku Neighborhood”. :)

it would be nice to be able to see if someone had commented on an update. right now it says “comments” regardless of there being comments or not.
also perhaps nice to add extra user profile info to the *.jaiku.com page under the users icon.

Jaiku is a nice innovative service. But without public RSS-Feeds, the whole is not really usable. Please add this important Feature!
Keep it up Folks.

Nemoflow, thanks for the suggestion. Public RSS feeds are on our TODO list. We’ve noticed an interesting trend, however: quite a many users have a private presence stream and are sharing information mainly with their family and friends.

One more suggestion- please enable in-bound status change. This would open the way for updating status from third-party apps, such as skype2jaiku state proxy / forwarder.

Petri: We plan to do this. Would you have any preferences regarding the API (HTTP, XMLRPC, SOAP, JSON, …)?
December 18th, 2006 at 1:22 am
Petri Says:
Petteri: personally, I would prefer some sort of plain-HTTP mechanism. For emulating function or method calls, XML-RPC is a good match; for easy mapping of data structures, JSON is a nice format, and for integrating with the big systems of the fortune 500 companies, SOAP seems to be the new CORBA. But for just effecting a status change, I think a single HTTP call is the the most efficient way to accomplish what is needed.

Petteri Says:
Petri: OK. We have implemented a few read-only JSON APIs (because it is very easy in Python :) and RSS feeds and we are opening up also REST style write APIs in near future. Send me an email if you feel like playing with them (petteri AT jaiku.com).

Hi guys,
I’m trying to set up my profile but it won’t accept my del.icio.us link - even when I cut and paste it directly from the address bar into jaiku. Each time I submit the link it says it can’t find any feeds. Have even tried submitting the RSS feed URL itself.
Other people seem to have their delicious bookmarks linked - any idea where I’m going wrong? The URL I’m trying is http://del.icio.us/vwilsonuk
Cheers,
Victoria
