Work started on the next release
August 23rd, 2006
Teemu is back from his European tour, and we’ve started working on the next release based on the feedback from the snazzin’ early adopters. Mika will get back from his stint in Silicon Valley next week (check out his ISEA project), and that’s when we’ll start working on new features for the presence server. Meanwhile, Petteri and I have been working to arrange seed financing for Jaiku. No announcements to make yet :)
I’ll be at FOO Camp in Sebastopol this weekend, and in the San Francisco Bay Area next week. If anyone there would like to meet up and discuss Jaiku, please give me a shout. Thanks!
Jonathan Says:
Hi,
Could you let us know what some of the feature requests have been?

Niklas Says:
Are you going to release Jaiku for S60 3.0 phones anytime soon?

Wilm Says:
Any chance of a UIQ version?

Teemu Says:
Niklas: S60 3rd ed. version is high on our priority list. There are really nice 3rd ed. phones coming and already out there.
However, security model of S60 3rd ed. requires that applications are signed with right capabilities, which requires not only porting of Jaiku to 3rd ed., but also some architectural changes. After all, Jaiku is quite complex piece of software that reads a lot of user and device data.
But we will keep you informed.
Wilm: UIQ version is not yet on our short-term plans. We would like to cover as many phone models as possible, thus porting Jaiku to all Symbian-based platforms (S60, S80, UIQ, …) would be a logical step. Just don’t hold your breath yet.

Petteri Says:
Jonathan: The Jaiku users have requested pretty much the same improvements/features. These are:
Easier installation/configuration [this is much too difficult at the moment and we will automise the process and make it a lot easier in general];
Battery and data transfer optimisations [we plan to provide options (e.g. high/medium/low data transfer) and visibility for both areas];
Support for wider range of handsets so that the friends could join the service [we will support at least Symbian 3rd Edition and SMS (i.e. all handsets) + improve the Web site a lot];
Improved privacy management [this is mainly a Web-based improvement and will be released soon].
In addition to these “must-have” improvements, we will implement much more radical new features, but more about these later :-)
One last thing: Please keep posting/mailing us your wishes! What would you like Jaiku to become?

just signed up - love the concept - don’t have a compatible phone - but hopefully i will soon or most likely, you’ll be growing way ahead of me…
good luck!

Sampo Says:
As a new S60 3rd ed. owner, one vote for that support as well.
The new Flickr integration in N73 is very bare bones implementation compared to what Jaiku has to offer. No tags, rich metadata nor background uploading. With 3MP images you just have to sit there and wait for it to finish the upload one by one. :(

Martin Paljak Says:
No, really. If and how this comes to java phones ? Somehow ? Standalone app?
August 31st, 2006 at 11:28 pm
Petteri Says:
Martin: Either we implement a Java version of the Jaiku client, we find a 3rd-party to do it, or somebody just implements his/her own version once we open up the client-server protocol (which we plan to do). Access to the handset internals is the key challenge with Java, but we believe a pretty good client can still be implemented. BTW, if somebody is interested to discuss the implementation with us, please let us know!

Sulka Says:
A feature I’d like to see is the option of being able to use the built-in contact list management software and just getting the list of Jaiku-enabled contacts from Jaiku itself. I’m finding the Jaiku’d contacts distracting when I’d like to just place a call and when I want to spy on Jyri, I couldn’t care less about the contacts without the presence data.
