Welcome to the beta!
July 14th, 2006
Today we’re releasing an early beta of Jaiku! Jaiku is a phone book that lets you share your real-time rich presence from the phone.
We invented the term ‘rich presence’ to describe the many relevant things a phone knows about you. Rich presence on Jaiku includes an IM-style away line, your phone profile (ring volume, vibrate), location (country, city/region, neigborhood), Bluetooth devices around, upcoming calendar events, and the duration how long your phone has been idle.
You can view your contacts’ rich presence on jaiku.com, and once you have signed up, you can download a free client application for Nokia Series 60 Second Edition phones. We’ve also created some badges that let you display your rich presence on your blog. There are still some rough edges - please help us improve it by sending feedback to bugs [at] jaiku.com.
Feel free to sign up, take it for a spin, and let us know what you think!

David Smith Says:
Jyri,
Fantastic to see this — and so soon after your talk at Reboot.
I can’t get an email through to bugs [at] jaiku.com: ‘Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently’. So, here’s my feedback as of tonight:
“Great to see this — well done, and good luck. Very exciting.
I can’t get it to install on my N70.
I download the .sis file to the phone and start the install.
1) Then, it asks me: ‘Replace 5.20 with 0.15?’. I’ve no idea what this means or why I am seeing it, but if I say no the install aborts; if I say yes …
2) ‘Close all applications?’. Saying no causes another abort; saying yes …
3) ‘Unable to install’.
4) ‘Installer System Error (1).’
Any ideas?”
Thanks!
David

Thanks for the message David! Sorry, the email address was probably not yet active when you sent the email - I just tested it and it should work :)
Re: the installation, thanks for reporting the bug. We’re on the problem and will get back to you with more information soon.
Cheers,
Jyri

Fantasic stuff. Having a few issues getting the contacts part to work on 6630, but the presence updating is working very well. Great start, lots of promise. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this will go. Impressive.

Peter Rukavina Says:
It wasn’t initially clear to me how to *uninstall* Jaiku (nothing personal — I simply don’t have the data plan to support using it).
Every time I tried to uninstall, the Application Manager complained that Jaiku was already running and if I selected “Yes” when asked whether I wanted to stop the application, the phone (N70) rebooted itself.
I eventually succeeded by quickly moving to uninstall Jaiku as soon as the phone restarted — i.e. before it had a chance to take hold of the phone. I presume that this delay (it seems like a minute or two) is intentional; in any case, it’s helpful.

Hey! Wonderful to see that you’re in beta! Unfortunately my American cell is not a nokia but i’ll get one when I get back to Sweden. I want to pimp my addressbook as soon as I can.

The installation problem described by David has been identified as a conflict between the Merkitys - Meaning Flickr uploader and Jaiku.
July 16th, 2006 at 3:24 am
Mika Says:
David Smith: please uninstall Merkitys manually first (go to Merkitys/Meaning,do Options|Shutdown, go to the Manager, uninstall Merkitys/Meaning). The Jaiku client includes Merkitys functionality, and flickr uploads will work the same as before after installation with no data being lost.

Andreea Says:
guys,
I haven’t read all the comments above, so my apologies if some of the issues I’ll talk about come up twice.
My two cents about Jaiku:
- i had some trouble installing it and making it connect - had to delete a lot of stuff off my phone but eventually it worked
- while the app is running, i can’t open my contact list. i tried restarting and even uninstalling the app and installing it again. It did not work.
- Jaiku running in the background is really heavy. I can’t use the camera at the same time (pops up a message that the memory is full) or ShoZu. So basically i ended up shutting it down to be able to use the other things I use every day.
I am sorry I did not get to the point where i could invite ppl and get to the magic of it all. But it did not work for me, nor for the friends I invited.
So anyways, I hope this helps.
Keep up the good work.

mikie Says:
Usama: The server is mainly just an off-the-shelf Jabber server, but we do run a proxy in front of it. The proxy does two things: 1) it compresses the XML stream, and 2) when the phone is not in use, the connection is kept almost completely idle-the proxy keeps updates of the presence of others and only sends them to the phone when its being used. These two things reduce network traffic quite a lot, allowing for longer battery life and smaller bills.
The phone client should work without the proxy, but has not been tested with different Jabber servers (e.g., it doesn’t seem to work with GTalk). We run jabberd 2 from jabberstudio.

Jyri Says:
Andreea: Thanks for the comments. Which handset did you try running Jaiku on? If it was a 6630 or 6680, you might want to try the latest version of the application that is now available for download.

Darla Says:
Hey guys… Great job!! I’ve installed it on my 6630. My question is this… Once you have a contact added lets say via the website, how do they show up in the Jaiku contacts on the phone?
July 17th, 2006 at 8:12 pm
Teemu Says:
Darla: to activate your contact s rich presence on the phone, you should add their Jaiku Nick to their contact entry.
1) Open Jaiku Contacts on your phone
2) Scroll to the contact whose rich presence you want to activate
3) Press Options, and select Add Jaiku Nick in the Options Menu
4) Type in the Jaiku Nick of your contact (e.g. teemu)
5) Wait a moment for the presence of your contact to activate.
We hope we can improve this flow (or automate the whole thing) in future versions.
For instructions with screenshots, see the last steps of the installation instructions at http://www.jaiku.com/static/installation.html

Hello So far I’m unable to get the program to connect however I’m sure that it is T-Mobile USA that is the issue. I’ve setup their proxy server 216.155.165.050 port 8080 and it still will not connect. Many companies have issues with T-Mobile USA in this regard. Hopefully you guys can work a way around this.

Hi,
in the name of all things Web 2.0, will you be publishing a public API for setting and getting presence status, friends list etc. etc. etc? Would be cool to build apps to take advantage of this and all other services around the web!

hi guys.. everytime I try to open my Jaiku settings on my n70 - it just closes again… I think it’s a bug..
any ideas what I can do ?
also in my jaiku contacts it has taken my contacts and duplicated them if they have more than one phonenumber - this is really annoying to a control freak like me… any ideas on that also ?

mikie Says:
krazykritter: Yaas, Jaiku won’t work on a connection that needs a proxy. It’s not HTTP based, but needs a ‘real’ Internet connection. We won’t be able to do much about that in the near future.

Dear sirs, I have two questions for you:
1. What’s the difference between your “rich presence” term and the one described by IETF in RFC 4480?
2. Is your application a real-time one?
Thank you
July 18th, 2006 at 12:13 pm
Teemu Says:
Sunky,
public web API is something that we really want to publish. Just don’t hold your breath yet, we have to work for backbone system more before that is possible.
But you can bet that we can’t wait the day when you and others can start to build new apps and toys on top of rich presence information.
