For a reason that is being investigated, the DNS server of our hosting partner started to point to a wrong address and the web servers connected to our old presence server. The problem is now fixed. We are sorry about the couple of hours’ break (that took much too long!)

We’re doing maintenance work on the Web server-Jabber interface today (Thursday 27 July) and registered users will notice the rich presence of their contacts list is not displayed on their home page while this is going on. The live rich presence of the featured people on the jaiku.com main page is also momentarily disabled. The presence badges will default to ‘offline’. We’ll do our best to return things to normal as soon as possible. The presence display on the mobile phone will continue to function normally. Thanks for your patience!

We’ve now fixed two bugs that caused an error message to appear when clicking the link in the invitation email. The first problem was that the link sometimes contained two consecutive slashes, which caused problems in Internet Explorer. This has now been fixed. The other problem was that the hash in the link was generated using the sender’s password as input, and if the sender changed their password, the links in the sent invitations would break. This has also been fixed.
If you’ve experienced trouble with the links in invitations you have received, we invite you to please try them now again. Also, if you’ve sent invitations that haven’t been accepted yet, please consider sending another invitation in case this problem prevented the recipient from accepting it!

Now that the launch is safely behind us and the Jaiku community is growing steadily, it is time to ask for feedback: What is your initial feeling about the service? How are you using it? Is something preventing you from using it? What is good/bad/ugly? And, especially, what would you like us to implement in the near future?
I do not want to spoil the fun by telling too much about our plans before hearing your initial feedback. However, we can already tell that since our Symbian Research & Development Division (SRDD) is slightly under-resourced (i.e. the lads are travelling :-) during the next few weeks, we will first focus on improving the Web site and implementing features that can be used without an S60 handset. In addition, we will make the installation process much simpler and port the client to the Symbian 3rd Edition (Nokia N80, E70 & Co). The deadline for the latter is still not fixed, but it is definitely high on our list.
You have posted extremely valuable blog comments and emails to bugs [at] jaiku.com. This was the key reason for us to release the service at such an early stage, so please keep them coming!

Thanks to everyone who has emailed us or commented on the blog! We’ve now fixed the problem that caused Jaiku Contacts to not always start properly on 6630, 6680 and other S60 2nd edition Feature Pack 2 phones. If you had problems starting Jaiku Contacts on these phones, sign in and download the latest version of your personalized client. If you want to check out the application without registering for the service, you can download the latest generic client from http://www.jaiku.com/download.
(For the more technically minded: we have to use a different UID for Jaiku Contacts on the emulator from the one on the phone - something had changed in my build environment when switching laptops and the emulator UID got used for the AIF file - which only FP2 seemed to care about, the application ran fine on a 6600 and an N70).

Today we’re releasing an early beta of Jaiku! Jaiku is a phone book that lets you share your real-time rich presence from the phone.
We invented the term ‘rich presence’ to describe the many relevant things a phone knows about you. Rich presence on Jaiku includes an IM-style away line, your phone profile (ring volume, vibrate), location (country, city/region, neigborhood), Bluetooth devices around, upcoming calendar events, and the duration how long your phone has been idle.
You can view your contacts’ rich presence on jaiku.com, and once you have signed up, you can download a free client application for Nokia Series 60 Second Edition phones. We’ve also created some badges that let you display your rich presence on your blog. There are still some rough edges - please help us improve it by sending feedback to bugs [at] jaiku.com.
Feel free to sign up, take it for a spin, and let us know what you think!
